Enzo Maresca in Crisis as Chelsea’s Top Defensive Target Says NO to £43m Deal!

Chelsea’s quest for defensive stability has hit a major roadblock as Inter Milan firmly rejected a £43.2m (€50m) bid for their star centre-back, Alessandro Bastoni. The Italian outlet Gazzetta reports that the Nerazzurri “politely declined” the offer, leaving new Blues manager Enzo Maresca scrambling to address a growing crisis at the heart of Chelsea’s backline.

The Blues kicked off their 2024-25 Premier League campaign with a goalless draw against Crystal Palace, a match that exposed their defensive vulnerabilities despite the clean sheet. A disallowed free kick from Eberechi Eze served as a stark reminder of the fragility at Stamford Bridge. With Levi Colwill sidelined by a devastating ACL injury that could rule him out for the entire 2025-26 season, and new concerns emerging over Tosin Adarabioyo’s fitness, Maresca’s options are dwindling fast.

In the Palace clash, Maresca fielded a makeshift central defensive pairing of Josh Acheampong and Trevoh Chalobah, while injury-prone Wesley Fofana remained an unused substitute, still recovering from a hamstring issue. Fofana’s history of fitness struggles makes him an unreliable long-term solution, forcing Chelsea to look outside their current squad for reinforcements.

Maresca had identified Alessandro Bastoni, the 26-year-old Italian international, as the ideal candidate to shore up Chelsea’s defense. The Inter Milan star, who has three years left on his contract, is a cornerstone of the Nerazzurri’s backline. With six goals and 24 assists in 258 appearances for Inter, including a starring role in their run to the 2024 Champions League final (despite a 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain), Bastoni’s value is undeniable.

However, Inter are under no pressure to sell. With Benjamin Pavard attracting interest from Galatasaray, Lille, and Saudi Pro League clubs, and veterans Francesco Acerbi and Stefan de Vrij nearing the end of their contracts, Bastoni remains a vital asset for the Italian giants. Any club hoping to prise him away would need to table an “astronomical” fee, far exceeding Chelsea’s initial £43.2m offer.

Chelsea’s defensive depth is further complicated by uncertainty surrounding their current roster. Renato Veiga, Axel Disasi, and Benoit Badiashile have all been linked with moves away, while young prospects Aaron Anselmino and Jorrel Hato lack the experience to anchor the backline in a high-stakes Premier League season. Maresca has singled out Tosin Adarabioyo as the only player capable of filling Colwill’s role, but with Tosin now injured, the need for a new centre-back is urgent.

As Chelsea prepare for a crucial London derby against West Ham United on Friday, Maresca is reportedly considering alternative targets. One bold option could be hijacking Liverpool’s proposed move for former Chelsea defender Marc Guehi, whose composure and Premier League experience make him a prime candidate. Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie is another intriguing prospect, though prising him away from the Bundesliga champions will be no easy task. Meanwhile, Benfica’s Antonio Silva has emerged as a potential long-term solution, with his youth and potential aligning with Chelsea’s vision.

With the transfer window clock ticking, Maresca faces a defining moment in his early tenure at Chelsea. The rejection of their bid for Bastoni is a setback, but it also underscores the challenges of rebuilding a squad plagued by injuries and inconsistency. Whether the Blues return with a higher offer for the Inter star or pivot to other targets, one thing is clear: Maresca needs a solution—and fast—if Chelsea are to avoid a defensive crisis derailing their season.
