ITV’s Big Brother revival has once again sparked romance in its iconic house, but just three days into the new series, fans are already up in arms over the budding connection between housemates Marcus and Elsa. The pair’s cozy moments under the covers, as seen in Wednesday’s episode, have drawn sharp criticism from viewers who are fed up with the show veering into Love Island territory.

The chemistry between Marcus and Elsa was undeniable from early on. During a lighthearted breakfast scene, Elsa’s giggles and lingering glances at Marcus prompted fellow housemate Caroline to quip, “I think she’s in love.” Marcus, playing along, cheekily responded, “I know, I don’t blame her,” before pulling Elsa into a warm hug. Later, the duo was spotted chatting intimately in bed, their flirty banter continuing into the night as the house lights dimmed. Caroline doubled down on her observation, declaring, “They’ve fallen in love.”

However, the swift development of this romance has left Big Brother fans less than thrilled. Social media erupted with complaints, with many viewers taking to X to express their frustration. One fan groaned, “I’m gonna HATE if Elsa’s #BBUK journey just becomes a romance with Marcus because she seems so sweet.” Another fumed, “Out of Elsa, Gani, and Zelah, I’d rather Elsa go because hearing her talk about ghosts and everything else she comes out with. And it will stop this romance that literally came out of nowhere.” Others were blunt, with posts like, “The romance stuff is so boring!” and “Since when did I put Love Island on, a romance already?” One viewer passionately declared, “I’m not here for the Elsa, Marcus romance. THIS ISN’T LOVE ISLAND. I hate Big Brother relationships.”
This isn’t the first time the Big Brother house has played Cupid. The 2023 series saw winner Jordan Sangha strike up a romance with fellow housemate Henry Southan, though the couple parted ways after 16 months. Last year, Nathan King and Rosie Williams enjoyed a whirlwind three-month romance before splitting in February. Most unexpectedly, earlier this year, Love Island star Chris Hughes and Dance Moms’ JoJo Siwa found love on the celebrity version of the show, and they’ve since been sharing their relationship journey on social media, even attending a friend’s wedding together.

Addressing the recurring romantic entanglements, Big Brother hosts AJ Odudu and Will Best recently spoke to the Daily Mail, pushing back against comparisons to Love Island. Will emphasized that these connections are “unplanned,” humorously suggesting that the intense environment fosters “trauma-bonding” among housemates. “They’ve come out of nowhere,” he said of the romances, noting that Chris and JoJo’s relationship was so unexpected that he initially thought it would fizzle out. “They’ll be going to their own flipping wedding in a minute, I wouldn’t be surprised,” he added with a laugh.
AJ offered her perspective, suggesting that the Big Brother house creates a unique space where people bond over shared experiences. “The world is in a place where a lot of people are focusing on everyone’s differences,” she said. “I think the Big Brother house is a space for people to focus on their similarities, and through seeing what they’ve got in common, they’ve just gone, ‘Do you know what? I actually love you!’”

Will agreed, attributing the romantic sparks to the show’s meticulous casting. “When you put people that have been carefully chosen into such an extreme environment, there’s going to be extreme reactions,” he explained. “And I guess it makes sense that every now and again, that reaction is romantic.”
While the show’s producers may not be aiming for love stories, the rapid connection between Marcus and Elsa has clearly struck a nerve with fans who want Big Brother to stay true to its roots. As the series continues, it remains to be seen whether this latest romance will flourish or fade under the watchful eyes of the house—and its vocal audience.
