It’s GO TIME: Vikings Star Greenard Sends Chilling Warning to NFL as J.J. McCarthy Eyes Comeback After 3 Games Out

The Minnesota Vikings are gearing up for a pivotal showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles on October 19, and all eyes are on second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy, who could reclaim his spot as the starter. Head coach Kevin O’Connell has kept the NFL guessing, refusing to name a starting quarterback, but the buzz around McCarthy’s potential return is electrifying. Sidelined by a high right ankle sprain suffered in a Week 2 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, McCarthy has missed the last three games. However, after the team’s Week 6 bye, the young signal-caller is reportedly on the verge of a triumphant comeback, and teammate Jonathan Greenard is sounding the alarm for the rest of the league.

McCarthy’s journey hasn’t been without hurdles. Now in his second NFL season, the young quarterback has faced injuries that have tested his grit. But according to Vikings pass rusher Jonathan Greenard, McCarthy’s approach to this latest setback is a far cry from last year’s struggles. In a recent interview on the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams, Greenard shared insight into McCarthy’s transformed mentality.

“Last year, you could tell he knew he wasn’t coming back anytime soon,” Greenard said. “But this year? He’s got a fire in him. You can see he knows he’s going to be back, and he’s ready to make things happen.”

McCarthy’s infectious energy hasn’t gone unnoticed. Even while nursing his ankle injury, he’s been a vocal leader on the sidelines, hyping up his teammates after every big play. “He’s one of the first guys out there cheering after a touchdown or a big moment, acting like he just ran off the field himself,” Greenard added with a grin. “Sometimes we’ve got to pull him back and remind him to take it easy on that ankle!”

McCarthy’s positivity and team-first attitude have kept the Vikings’ locker room buzzing, proving that his leadership extends far beyond the huddle. “Some guys get injured and shut down, but not J.J.,” Greenard said. “He’s not letting this slow him down. He’s keeping the energy high, and it’s contagious.”

While McCarthy has been sidelined, veteran quarterback Carson Wentz has stepped into the spotlight, delivering clutch performances that have kept the Vikings competitive. Signed on August 24 after training camp, Wentz quickly adapted to O’Connell’s dynamic offense. In his three starts, he’s thrown for 759 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions, guiding the Vikings to a 2-1 record in McCarthy’s absence.

Wentz’s standout moments include a commanding victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, a valiant but unsuccessful comeback attempt against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Dublin, and a thrilling fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Cleveland Browns in London. Greenard didn’t hold back in praising Wentz’s leadership and poise under pressure.

“Carson’s a vet, plain and simple,” Greenard said. “When he talks game plan, you listen. His confidence and experience lift everyone around him. He’s been a great mentor to J.J., too, showing him the ropes while keeping us in the fight.”

As the Vikings prepare to face the Eagles, the possibility of McCarthy’s return has the NFL on notice. Greenard’s words carry a warning: Minnesota’s young quarterback is hungrier than ever, and his teammates are ready to rally behind him. Whether it’s McCarthy or Wentz under center, the Vikings are poised to bring their A-game.

“Shout out to both Carson and Eric Wilson for stepping up huge,” Greenard said. “But with J.J. itching to get back, the league better watch out. We’re coming.”
