Ruben Amorim has made a decision, what will be the future of Mainoo and Zirkzee?

Rúben Amorim Makes Clear Transfer Decision on Mainoo and Zirkzee

Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has made his position clear on the future of two young players, Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee, amid growing speculation over possible moves in the January transfer window. Despite both players struggling for game time, Amorim insists they will not be allowed to leave and remain part of his long-term plans for the club.

Mainoo, a 20-year-old midfielder and academy graduate, was once one of United’s brightest hopes but has seen his role diminish this season. He has yet to start a Premier League match, sitting behind the likes of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in Amorim’s pecking order. Similarly, Zirkzee — the Dutch forward who joined from Bologna — has also found minutes hard to come by, featuring mostly as a substitute in a handful of league and cup appearances.

Recent reports suggested that both players could be loaned out in January to gain more experience. However, Amorim shut down those rumors, saying:

“I understand it’s frustrating when players don’t play as much as they want. At a club like ours, there’s always outside noise — the media, agents, the national team, upcoming tournaments. But they are our players, and we need them to finish the season strongly.”

Amorim emphasized that his focus remains on the team’s progress, not on off-field distractions such as Marcus Rashford’s earlier criticism that “the club lacks consistency.”

For Mainoo, the story is particularly noteworthy. The young midfielder scored in last season’s FA Cup final and represented England at EURO 2024 under Erik ten Hag. Yet since Amorim’s arrival, Mainoo has barely featured — even though the club didn’t sign any new central midfielders in the summer. This has led to questions over Amorim’s team management, especially after his decision to use Bruno Fernandes in a deeper midfield role, which arguably limits the captain’s attacking influence.

Zirkzee chưa được ra sân nhiều từ đầu mùa

As for Zirkzee, this is his first season at Old Trafford, and he’s facing stiff competition from strikers like Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha. Despite that, Amorim still views the Dutchman as a valuable squad option, particularly given United’s ongoing struggles in front of goal.

The Portuguese manager made it clear that keeping Mainoo and Zirkzee is not about blocking their ambitions but about maintaining depth and balance within the squad. Amorim reportedly rejected the idea of letting Mainoo go — even though selling an academy player would count as pure profit under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) — because he believes both players are crucial for the long-term project.

For Manchester United, the short-term goal remains finding stability in the Premier League after an inconsistent start. Yet Amorim’s firm stance also sends a strong internal message: every player, even those currently on the bench, has a role to play in the team’s rebuilding process.

In short, Rúben Amorim has drawn a clear line — neither Kobbie Mainoo nor Joshua Zirkzee will leave Manchester United in January. His decision reflects a broader philosophy: building for the future requires patience, trust, and faith in the club’s young talent, even when the results don’t come immediately.
