€100 Million Audition Gone Wrong: Casemiro Teaches Baleba a Lesson at Old Trafford
The 4–2 defeat suffered by Brighton at Old Trafford was more than just a loss on the scoreboard. It became the stage for Carlos Baleba’s failed “€100 million audition,” as the young midfielder was completely outclassed by Casemiro — the very player he was once tipped to replace.
Before the match, Baleba caught attention by posting “Coming to Old Trafford” on social media. Many Manchester United fans saw it as a teasing hint, as the 21-year-old Brighton midfielder had been on United’s radar last summer. Brighton refused to sell, declaring him “untouchable,” and his valuation has since soared to around €100 million.

Saturday’s match, therefore, became an unexpected audition. Baleba went head-to-head with Casemiro — the man he was expected to succeed in the near future. While Casemiro, now 33, is slowly regaining manager Rúben Amorim’s trust, questions about his long-term role persist. For Baleba, this was a golden chance to prove his worth.
But the 90 minutes at Old Trafford turned into a nightmare. Instead of a generational handover, fans witnessed the veteran teaching the youngster a hard lesson in what it takes to dominate at the highest level.
In his 70 minutes on the pitch, Casemiro bossed the midfield. He was not only solid defensively but also decisive in attack, contributing one goal and one assist. His stats spoke volumes: seven defensive actions, seven duels, and four won. It was a complete performance — a reminder of why he once anchored Real Madrid’s midfield dynasty.

Baleba, in contrast, endured a miserable afternoon. Playing the full 90 minutes, the Cameroonian midfielder failed to impose himself. Brighton lost control of the midfield, and Baleba’s lack of influence was a major factor. He managed just two defensive actions throughout the match — the same number as Kobbie Mainoo, who played only the final 20 minutes. Even Bruno Fernandes, known more for his creativity than defending, made eight defensive contributions.
The most damning statistic was his duels: only two contested, winning one — the lowest among all starting players on either team. For a midfielder valued at €100 million and scouted for his ability to “cover the pitch and shield the defence,” such passivity was inexcusable.
His only bright spot was passing accuracy — 81 %, slightly higher than Casemiro’s 78 %. Yet most of his passes were safe and sideways, offering no penetration or creativity. Meanwhile, Casemiro still managed to create one key chance.
Manchester United need a commanding, energetic presence in midfield — someone who can tackle, press, and lead. But Baleba showed immaturity and lack of physical dominance. He was overwhelmed by the tempo of the match and by Casemiro’s intelligence and experience.
Of course, this was only one game. Every young player has off days. Yet this wasn’t just any fixture — it was a big-stage test, a live audition in front of potential future employers. And in that test, Baleba failed to convince.
The €100 million question had been raised before kickoff. After 90 minutes at Old Trafford, the answer seems clear: not yet. Baleba may be a promising talent, but he still has a long way to go before he can match the standard Manchester United demand. And Casemiro? He proved he’s far from finished.
