The Kneeland family, grappling with unimaginable sorrow, released a poignant statement mourning the loss of their “beloved” son. “We are devastated by this tremendous loss and are still processing the depth of our grief,” they shared. They painted a vivid picture of Marshawn beyond the gridiron: a devoted family man who cherished his roles as son, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, grandson, and friend. “He was kind, determined, humble, and full of love,” the statement continued. “His light shone brightly in every life he touched, and his spirit will continue to live on through the countless hearts he inspired.”

Amid the outpouring of condolences from fans, friends, and the community, the family expressed deep gratitude while pleading for privacy to honor Marshawn’s memory in peace.

But the tragedy deepened with revelations from police dispatch audio, obtained by PEOPLE, shedding light on Kneeland’s final moments. In a chilling group text to his family, he bid them farewell with a simple “goodbye,” sparking immediate alarm. “They just received a text from him, a group text from him saying goodbye,” one dispatcher relayed. “They’re concerned for his welfare.”

The audio captured the frantic efforts of Kneeland’s girlfriend, Catalina, who urgently tried to reach his agent, Jonathan Perzley. “She’s trying to call his agent,” the dispatcher noted, adding a haunting detail: “She’s saying he is armed and has a history of mental illness and her quote was, ‘He will end it all.’”

Frisco Police Department later confirmed the grim circumstances, classifying the death as an apparent suicide. The incident unfolded after a high-stakes vehicle pursuit involving an outside agency, which escalated into a multi-agency search in Frisco. Kneeland fled his vehicle on foot, and his body was discovered nearby at 1:31 a.m.—just three hours after the chase—with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“The cause/manner of death will be determined by the Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office,” the department stated, as investigations continue.

Kneeland’s story, from rising football star to a life cut tragically short, has left fans reeling, his final words echoing as a stark reminder of the hidden struggles behind the spotlight. As the Cowboys community mourns, tributes pour in for a talent gone too soon, whose legacy of kindness and determination will endure.
