TPO – Former “Love Island” presenter Caroline Flack has committed suicide while awaiting trial for assaulting her boyfriend.
PA Media news agency quoted a coroner as saying that British TV presenter Caroline Flack died by suicide after learning she was certain to be prosecuted for assaulting her boyfriend, and fearing the press would probe her private life.
Flack died in February while awaiting trial, but the cause of death was only announced on August 6. The death of the former host of the hit dating show “Love Island” has sparked a fierce debate about press standards, social media abuse and the protection of reality TV stars in the UK.
Mary Hassell, the coroner, said on August 6 that the way the case was reported in the national press had put Flack under immense pressure and created fears that her career would be ruined
“Although her mental state was directly related to her death, I find that the reason she took her own life was because she knew she would be prosecuted, and she would have to face the media, the press, the public. It would all come down to her,” Ms. Hassell said at Poplar Coroner’s Court in London.
Ms. Hassel’s comments were echoed by the late MC’s mother, Chris Flack.
According to PA, Flack discovered prosecutors were preparing a case for prosecution a day before she took her own life. Specifically, prosecutor Kate Weiss considered charging Flack a week after the assault, instead of just giving her a warning. Meanwhile, friends said the star, born in 1979, originally believed the case would be dropped.
Prosecutor Weiss pointed out various factors that led to the decision. First, at the time of the assault, her boyfriend Lewis Burton (28 years old) was sleeping, unable to defend himself. In addition, according to the police, Flack showed no remorse during his testimony. It is known that when the police arrived at the scene of the attack in December 2019, Flack confessed: “I hit him (Burton). He cheated on me.”

Caroline Flack was accused by her young lover of hitting him in the head with a lamp. After being arrested, Flack did not plead guilty to assaulting her 13-year-old boyfriend. She was released on bail pending trial in March. The incident caused Flack to lose her position as host of “Love Island”, which she had been with since 2015.
Before her death, Caroline Flack was one of the most famous entertainment MCs in the foggy country. In addition to “Love Island”, she had taken on many other big shows such as Bo’ Selecta! (2002), I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! NOW! (2009–2010), The Xtra Factor (2011–2013), The X-Factor (2015)… In 2015, she ranked 5th in the list of Sexiest Women voted by FHM.
