DeMarcus Cousins, a four-time NBA All-Star and two-time All-NBA Team member, has long been known for his fiery temper, which has often overshadowed his immense talent. With 14 ejections—tied for the sixth most in NBA history—and over 140 technical fouls during his NBA career, Cousins’ volatile demeanor has frequently made headlines. Despite his accolades, his career has been seen as somewhat underwhelming, marred by two serious injuries and a lack of team success, including his time with the Sacramento Kings and even the 2019 Golden State Warriors, whose championship hopes were derailed by injuries to Cousins and Kevin Durant.

That same temper flared dramatically on Monday night during a game in Puerto Rico, where Cousins now plays for the Guaynabo Mets. In a heated matchup against the Vaqueros de Bayamon, Cousins clashed with a courtside fan, leading to his ejection from the game. As he made his way to the tunnel, the situation escalated further when fans began hurling drinks and popcorn at him. Visibly enraged, Cousins attempted to push through police officers and team personnel to confront the culprits, even making obscene gestures toward the crowd. Former NBA player Theo Pinson, present at the scene, did his best to de-escalate the situation and prevent it from spiraling further.

The incident drew immediate comparisons to the infamous 2004 Malice at the Palace, where Ron Artest charged into the stands after a fan threw a drink at him, resulting in punches thrown and significant changes to NBA fan interaction policies. Cousins’ outburst in Puerto Rico could prompt similar rule changes in the league there, as authorities may look to address player-fan altercations to prevent such chaotic scenes in the future.
