THE UNTHINKABLE IS REAL! Lakers Catch Lucky Break in Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Sweepstakes

In a league where superstars rarely change teams mid-season, the Los Angeles Lakers might just be on the verge of pulling off another blockbuster. Fresh off their acquisition of Luka Doncic ahead of last year’s trade deadline, the Lakers are now positioned as potential frontrunners in the sweepstakes for Milwaukee Bucks’ two-time MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo. And thanks to some unexpected developments, what once seemed like a pipe dream could become reality.

According to Marc Stein of “The Stein Line,” in a report published on Sunday, December 14, 2025, three of the NBA’s most asset-rich teams—San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, and Oklahoma City Thunder—are unlikely to enter the bidding war for Antetokounmpo. “There is a growing belief among trade-trackers that San Antonio and Houston, like Oklahoma City, do not plan to join the chase for Antetokounmpo even if the Bucks ultimately do decide to consider in-season proposals for their two-time MVP,” Stein wrote. “All three of those teams, as you can imagine, like what they have going.”

This revelation is a massive lucky break for the Lakers. With these heavyweights sitting out, the competition thins out significantly, potentially driving down the trade price for the 31-year-old Greek Freak. Antetokounmpo, who just celebrated his birthday, has already missed 10 games this season due to injury—a concerning pattern, as he’s sat out at least 15 games in five of the past six regular seasons. Add in his postseason injury woes, and teams might hesitate to mortgage their futures for him.

Further bolstering the Lakers’ chances is the evolving NBA landscape under the second-apron era. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst highlighted on a December 5, 2025, podcast that trade returns for aging stars are shrinking. Luxury tax penalties and roster restrictions make it harder for contenders to absorb massive contracts like Antetokounmpo’s $54.1 million salary for the 2025-26 season. While interest from multiple teams could spark a bidding war, the absence of asset-laden suitors levels the playing field for resource-strapped teams like Los Angeles.

The Lakers aren’t flush with draft picks, but they have enough to make a compelling offer. They can dangle a single first-round pick (either 2031 or 2032) along with first-round swap rights in five other drafts. To sweeten the pot and match salaries, they’d likely include rising star Austin Reaves, who’s been balling out this season with averages of 27.8 points, 6.7 assists, 5.6 rebounds, and one steal per game. Reaves, a potential All-Star in the stacked Western Conference, is currently sidelined with a mild calf strain but is expected back soon after a reevaluation in about a week.

Beyond Reaves, the Lakers would need to bundle expiring contracts—essentially all they have—to reach Antetokounmpo’s salary figure. A package headlined by that first-rounder, five swaps, and Reaves is a solid foundation, but it might not be enough on its own to pry Giannis from Milwaukee. To seal the deal before the early February deadline, Los Angeles could rope in a third team to provide additional draft assets or a promising young player, making the offer irresistible to the Bucks.

Imagine the possibilities: Antetokounmpo joining forces with Doncic and the Lakers’ core. It would create a juggernaut capable of dominating the West and chasing championships. While injuries and age are risks, Giannis’s elite two-way play—when healthy—could elevate the franchise to new heights.

Of course, nothing is guaranteed. The Bucks might hold firm, hoping to turn their season around, or another dark-horse team could emerge. But with key competitors bowing out, the Lakers have caught a rare lucky break. The unthinkable—a Giannis-to-LA trade—is starting to feel very real. Stay tuned as the trade deadline approaches; this could be the move that reshapes the NBA.
