IT’S OFFICIAL! The $13M “Speed Demon” Set For A Houston Reunion To Solve Kevin Durant’s Playmaking Crisis

The Houston Rockets have shown life with a 5-2 stretch in their last seven games, but their glaring turnover problem (29th in turnover percentage) and lack of a true point guard since Fred VanVleet’s season-ending ACL tear remain exposed. Without VanVleet, Alperen Şengün, Kevin Durant, Amen Thompson, and others have formed a committee to initiate offense – leading to dropped games they should have won (vs. Portland, Sacramento, New Orleans).

Despite a solid 27-16 record (4th in the West), adding a veteran floor general could unlock more potential. One underrated name emerging: Dennis Schröder from the Sacramento Kings – a team at 12-34, 14th in the West, and likely sellers at the deadline.

Proposed Trade

  • Rockets receive: Dennis Schröder
  • Kings receive: Dorian Finney-Smith, Jae’Sean Tate, 2026 second-round pick, 2027 second-round pick (via MEM), 2029 second-round pick (via SAC)

Why Schröder Fits Houston Schröder (32) averages 12.8 points, 3.1 rebounds, 5.4 assists this season – not peak form but still a capable PG with ball-handling, pressing, and off-ball ability. He thrives in fast, spacing systems – ideal for Ime Udoka’s style centered on Durant. His expiring deal and Kings’ rebuild timeline make him affordable (second-round picks + two non-core veterans).

Finney-Smith and Tate have been limited contributors this season (defense-first but minimal offense), so moving them for a PG upgrade makes sense without hurting the core.

Benefits for Both Sides

  • Rockets: Immediate veteran PG reduces turnovers, lets Durant focus on scoring/playmaking, and preserves first-round picks for summer 2026 (when bigger stars may be available). Depth at PG improves without major cost.
  • Kings: Gain three second-round picks – valuable assets for rebuilding. Schröder doesn’t fit their youth timeline, so trading him for draft capital is smart.

Deadline Reality Houston has reportedly spoken to around half the league ahead of Feb. 5. Schröder is an “underrated” but realistic target: low cost, experienced, and available from a seller. If completed, the Rockets gain a steady PG committee (Amen Thompson develops, Schröder mentors) to maximize Durant (36.9 MPG, 25.9 PPG) and the young core.
