LOS ANGELES DROP A BOMBSHELL! The 3-Player Package From Cleveland That Could End The LeBron James Era In Hollywood

For the first time since LeBron James joined in 2018, the Los Angeles Lakers appear ready to move beyond him. At 41 and in his 23rd season, LeBron remains elite (22.5 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 6.9 APG, 50%+ FG), but his fit with Luka Dončić (similar ball-dominant, playmaking styles) isn’t seamless. The Lakers performed better without him early this season, and pressure is mounting to “cash in” before he walks in 2026 free agency or retires.

Per an NBA exec speaking to HeavyOnSports, the Lakers are open to trading LeBron back to the Cleveland Cavaliers – the team that drafted him in 2003 and won the 2016 title with him. Cleveland is one of the few destinations LA would accept – not just “any team.”

Why Cleveland Makes Sense for LeBron

  • Homecoming: Cleveland is LeBron’s basketball birthplace – a return for a final chapter could be a perfect legacy move, mentoring Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen, and the young core.
  • Immediate Contention: Cavs are already East contenders – adding LeBron could make them Finals favorites.
  • Still Elite: At 41, LeBron remains a force – enough to elevate any roster.

Massive Hurdle: Cavs’ Second Apron Status Cleveland is a second apron team under CBA rules – trades must be dollar-for-dollar, limited multi-player incoming, and restricted picks. LeBron’s $52.6 million salary requires Cavs to shed ~$22 million first.

The most logical cut: DeAndre Hunter – high salary, movable to create space. Once the $22M gap is cleared, Cavs could absorb LeBron (pushing them back into second apron). But they won’t sacrifice core pieces like Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen, Sam Merrill, or breakout second-year forward Jaylon Tyson.

Possible Scenario

  • Cavs trade Hunter + filler + picks for LeBron.
  • Lakers get Hunter (solid defender, reasonable deal) + assets to build around Dončić.
  • If executed, Cavs become Mitchell + LeBron + Mobley + Allen – instant Finals threat.

Reality Check: Feb. 5 Deadline Looms LeBron holds the no-trade clause – he must approve. If he wants Cleveland, he controls it. Lakers won’t rush without strong offers – but if they believe he’ll walk in 2026 free agency, this is their last chance for return value.
