BOMSHELL! Lakers Release Statement on LeBron James’ Early Exit Amid Crushing Defeat to the Cavaliers

CLEVELAND – LeBron James was visibly moved during the first timeout of the Los Angeles Lakers’ game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday (Jan. 28, 2026), shedding tears on the bench as the Cavaliers aired a tribute video in his honor. It marked a rare emotional moment for James, who has received numerous tribute videos since leaving Cleveland in July 2018 — but none had previously brought him to tears.

The tribute — as is tradition when James returns to Cleveland — featured highlights from his 2016 championship run (the franchise’s only title), iconic plays, and his 11-year tenure with the Cavaliers. It concluded with the simple message: “Welcome home.” Instead of raising his hand to the crowd or placing it over his heart, James covered his face with both hands and pulled his jersey over his head. When he returned to the floor after the timeout, he was seen wiping tears from his eyes.

LeBron, now 41 and in the final year of his Lakers contract, has not publicly stated whether this season — his 23rd in the NBA — will be his last. If it is, Wednesday night’s game was almost certainly his final appearance at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse — the arena where he delivered Cleveland its first and only championship in 2016 and played home games for 11 seasons.

Pre-Game Emotional Signs Before tip-off, James showed similar sentimentality. After his signature chalk toss at the scorer’s table, he walked slowly toward the far end of the court, gazing into the stands as though seeing memories play out in the crowd. This was his eighth game in Cleveland as a Laker (including the 2022 NBA All-Star Game), but none had elicited such a raw emotional response.

James was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 draft, arriving with the promise to “light up Cleveland like Las Vegas.” He led the franchise to five NBA Finals, including four consecutive trips after his 2014 return from Miami. The 2016 championship — when he averaged 29.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 8.9 assists in the Finals — remains the pinnacle of Cavaliers history.

Historic Milestone in the Game During the contest, the Lakers announced that LeBron had reached 60,000 career regular-season minutes — becoming the first player in NBA history to achieve the mark. Lakers reporter Jovan Buha shared the news on X:

“With his 24th minute tonight at Cleveland, LeBron James reached 60,000 career regular-season minutes, per the Lakers. He becomes the first player in NBA history to reach the mark.”

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar sits second all-time with 57,446 minutes. In 2023, James also passed Abdul-Jabbar for most career points in NBA history.

Lakers’ Current Situation The blowout loss ended the Lakers’ two-game winning streak and dropped them to 28-17. They continue their eight-game road trip and will face the Washington Wizards (11-34) on Friday — an opportunity to regain momentum.

LeBron continues to perform at an elite level in his 23rd season. But with age, roster changes (Luka Dončić now the focal point), and uncertainty about his future in Los Angeles, every return to Cleveland carries added weight. If this truly was his final game in the city where it all began, the tears during the tribute video may have been the perfect, poignant punctuation to an extraordinary chapter.
