Acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo seemed more like fantasy than a realistic in-season possibility for the Golden State Warriors just weeks ago. The Milwaukee Bucks’ two-time MVP and former Finals MVP had publicly stated he would never request a trade from Milwaukee, making Golden State’s chances appear slim.

Now that Antetokounmpo and the Bucks are reportedly prepared to part ways – per ESPN’s Shams Charania – the Warriors suddenly have a legitimate shot to change the narrative around their disappointing 2025-26 campaign.
However, a concerning report from ESPN’s Bobby Marks suggests a deal may not happen before the February 5 trade deadline.
Marks stated Thursday:
“I wasn’t surprised as far as that (the report) coming out, but I’ll be more surprised if a deal gets done by next Thursday. I’m probably more in the camp that this is going to drag into the offseason here when we get into the lottery and into free agency.”
Why Waiting Until Summer Is Problematic for the Warriors Golden State entered Wednesday’s game against Utah at 26-22, sitting eighth in the Western Conference – far from contender status. Stephen Curry continues to defy age (27.3 PPG), but the team lacks a true second star to create matchup nightmares. Waiting until the offseason means accepting another “mediocre” regular season while Curry’s championship window narrows.
Marks emphasized that the Bucks are in no rush to move Giannis now. They can wait until the offseason for expanded draft availability and clearer cap flexibility league-wide – potentially increasing competition and raising Giannis’ value.
Warriors Still Have a Path to a Deal Before the Deadline Golden State controls up to four future first-round picks, multiple pick swaps, and young talent like Jonathan Kuminga – assets that align with Milwaukee’s demand for “blue-chip young talent and/or a surplus of draft picks.”
If the Bucks decide to act before February 5, league executives believe the Warriors’ position improves significantly compared to offseason competition.
