Amid a challenging 2025-26 campaign for the Miami Heat, one bright spot emerged Sunday night: guard Norman Powell was selected as an Eastern Conference reserve for the 2026 NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles on Feb. 15. The announcement came as the Heat hosted the Chicago Bulls at Kaseya Center—Powell was sidelined for personal reasons and missed the celebration in person.
It’s Powell’s first All-Star berth in 11 NBA seasons, a milestone made sweeter by the venue: Intuit Dome, his home court last season with the Clippers before the July 2025 trade to Miami. At nearly 33, Powell’s selection underscores a career resurgence—he’s reinvented himself multiple times: elite bench spark in Toronto, Sixth Man contender out West, and now a legitimate starter and scoring force for the Heat.

Powell has long viewed himself as All-Star caliber. Last season, he was vocal about being overlooked despite strong numbers. This year, peers across the league echoed the sentiment postgame: “You’re an All-Star.” The snub fueled his drive, especially filling the scoring void during Tyler Herro’s injury-plagued stretches.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra praised the work ethic: “One of the best compliments is how he’s starred in every role—ninth man, sixth man, starter—and keeps getting better after 30. That’s dedication to the craft.” Spoelstra sees Powell as the ideal starter fit in Miami’s system.
This year’s All-Star format breaks tradition: three eight-man teams (two U.S., one World/international) in a round-robin tournament (four 12-minute games). Top two records advance to the championship game. Powell, who represented Jamaica in last summer’s World Cup qualifiers, qualifies for the World roster alongside stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece), Luka Dončić (Slovenia), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Canada), Nikola Jokić (Serbia), and Victor Wembanyama (France).
Full East reserves: Donovan Mitchell (Cavaliers), Jalen Johnson (Hawks), Karl-Anthony Towns (Knicks), Pascal Siakam (Pacers), Scottie Barnes (Raptors), Jalen Duren (Pistons), and Powell. West reserves: Anthony Edwards (Timberwolves), Jamal Murray (Nuggets), Chet Holmgren (Thunder), Kevin Durant (Rockets), Devin Booker (Suns), Deni Avdija (Trail Blazers), LeBron James (Lakers—22nd straight!).
Starters East: Giannis, Jaylen Brown, Jalen Brunson, Cade Cunningham, Tyrese Maxey. West: Steph Curry, Luka Dončić, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokić, Victor Wembanyama.
Replacements may be needed (e.g., Giannis out with calf injury). Heat’s second-year big Kel’el Ware also heads to Rising Stars on Feb. 13.
