In a devastating blow to Golden State’s championship hopes, the Warriors announced that six-time All-Star Jimmy Butler will undergo season-ending ACL reconstruction surgery next week.
According to Nick Friedell of The Athletic, Butler will have the procedure on February 9 in Los Angeles, performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Bert Mandelbaum.
The news lands just days after Golden State’s blockbuster pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo fell apart, forcing the front office to pivot quickly—and now delivering a gut punch to a team that was finally finding its rhythm.
Elite Surgeon Handling Butler’s Recovery
Dr. Mandelbaum is one of the most respected names in sports medicine. Based in Santa Monica and affiliated with the prestigious Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute, he has operated on countless NBA, NFL, and NHL stars. He previously served as chief medical officer for the L.A. Galaxy and team physician for the U.S. men’s national soccer team.
Mandelbaum is also a global leader in ACL prevention, having created the widely adopted FIFA 11+ program, and currently directs a FIFA Medical Center of Excellence.
Typical recovery from ACL reconstruction for NBA players ranges from 9 to 12 months, meaning the 36-year-old Butler is almost certainly sidelined until deep into the 2026-27 season—if not longer.
Brutal Timing for a Surging Warriors Squad
Butler tore his ACL on January 19 against his former team, the Miami Heat, during what had been Golden State’s most promising stretch of the season. The Warriors had won 12 of their previous 16 games and were climbing back into the Western Conference playoff race, with Butler’s veteran two-way dominance at the heart of the resurgence.
In January alone, he averaged 21.3 points on 53% shooting. Against Miami, he had 17 points in just 21 minutes before the injury ended his night—and effectively his season.
Since Butler went down, Golden State has stumbled to a 2-5 record, exposing just how much the team leaned on its most dependable leader.
Butler remained defiant on Instagram shortly after the injury, posting highlights from the Warriors’ 135-112 win over Miami with the caption: “Be back before you know it.” One image showed him styled as a military general, nicknamed “General Soreness.”
Giannis Dream Dies, Forcing Immediate Pivot
With Butler now out long-term and Stephen Curry (turning 38 in March) in the twilight of his prime, the Warriors aggressively chased Giannis Antetokounmpo in talks that reportedly put Draymond Green on the table. Milwaukee, however, elected to keep their two-time MVP through the season, slamming the door on Golden State’s biggest swing.
Left without their superstar target, the Warriors shifted focus to bolstering the frontcourt with a high-risk, high-reward addition.
Warriors Land Kristaps Porziņģis in Post-Giannis Plan B
Golden State acquired Kristaps Porziņģis from Atlanta in exchange for Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield. In a separate move, they sent Trayce Jackson-Davis to Toronto for the Lakers’ 2026 second-round pick.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Warriors have been eyeing Porziņģis for months and remain optimistic about his upside—if he can stay healthy.
“They get a high-upside big man if Kristaps Porziņģis can be on the floor,” Charania said. “They’re excited about him… Kristaps and Al Horford were actually teammates in Boston when the Celtics won a championship a couple of years ago.”
Porziņģis, on an expiring $30.7 million contract, has played in only 17 games this season and missed 13 straight before the trade. Yet with their championship window narrowing and Butler sidelined, the Warriors rolled the dice on the 7’3″ stretch big.
A Franchise at the Crossroads
Golden State now faces a delicate balance: staying competitive around Curry in the short term while preserving flexibility for the future. Losing Butler for the foreseeable future removes their most reliable veteran presence, and betting on Porziņģis’ health is far from a sure thing.
One thing is clear—this week’s whirlwind of a failed Giannis pursuit followed by Butler’s season-ending injury has dramatically altered the Warriors’ trajectory. The chase for another title just got a lot harder.
