THE SHOCKING “KING FOR DEMIGOD” TRADE: THE LAKERS and BUCKS are Planning a $175 Million Trade Idea That Will Send LeBron James to the East

The Los Angeles Lakers’ 2026 offseason will revolve around one question: What does LeBron James do next? At 41, the 17-time All-Star enters unrestricted free agency this summer, and his decision—retire, re-sign with L.A., or chase one last title elsewhere—will shape the franchise’s direction. With the Lakers reportedly eyeing blockbuster moves to bolster a Luka Dončić-led core, Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus explored a wild but intriguing scenario: Sign James to a new deal, then trade him to the Milwaukee Bucks for two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Lakers trade idea sends LeBron James to Bucks for $175 million NBA champion, two-time MVP - Yahoo Sports

Pincus wrote last Wednesday:

“Realistically, it’s a long shot as the Lakers (assuming they’re moving on from James) have goals in mind to bolster a Luka Dončić-led roster. James could be the primary outgoing salary for a star like Giannis Antetokounmpo, but James is unlikely to choose the Bucks as his next destination (especially with Antetokounmpo departing). A third team could be the answer, the one James desires, but it’s complicated enough that it’s among the least likely options.”

The Hypothetical Trade Framework The idea hinges on L.A. first re-signing James (likely a short-term, high-salary deal to match Giannis’ ~$48-50M annual figure), then flipping him to Milwaukee as salary filler. In return, the Lakers would land Antetokounmpo—the 6’11” rim-running force averaging 28.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 0.9 steals on 64.5% FG in 30 games this season.

Giannis brings:

  • Unstoppable paint dominance and transition scoring
  • Elite defense (multiple Defensive Player of the Year level)
  • Proven championship pedigree (2021 Finals MVP)

He wouldn’t solve L.A.’s perimeter shooting woes, but pairing him with Dončić’s creation and playmaking could create one of the league’s most dynamic duos—Giannis attacking the rim off Dončić passes, while Luka stretches defenses for Giannis cuts and lobs.

Why It’s a Long Shot (Per Pincus)

  • James’ Preference: LeBron is unlikely to green-light a move to Milwaukee—especially if Giannis is leaving. His next destination would likely prioritize contention, family (Bronny in L.A.?), or legacy.
  • Complexity: A third team would be needed to facilitate, adding layers of negotiation.
  • Bucks’ Stance: Milwaukee has shown no public intent to trade Giannis; his recent calf strain return keeps them competitive.

The Lakers’ recent blockbuster (trading Anthony Davis to Dallas for Dončić in February 2025) proves they can pull off shocking deals, but this one faces steep hurdles.

Lakers’ Offseason Stakes With Dončić now the centerpiece, L.A. aims to build a sustainable contender. If James opts in or re-signs, they could pursue Giannis as the ultimate win-now splash. If James walks or retires, cap space opens for other stars or youth development.

Pincus concludes it’s “among the least likely options”—but in an NBA where nothing is impossible, the Lakers’ history of bold trades keeps the door cracked open.

For now, all eyes remain on LeBron: His decision will dictate whether the Lakers chase one final title run with Giannis—or pivot to a post-LeBron era around Dončić.
