The Miami Heat secured a hard-fought 125-115 victory over the Houston Rockets on Saturday at Kaseya Center, but the win came with a fresh injury concern for key reserve guard Davion Mitchell. The point guard was diagnosed with a left-shoulder contusion after drawing an offensive foul on Rockets center Alperen Şengün early in the game. Mitchell is now listed as questionable for Tuesday night’s resumption against the Brooklyn Nets at Kaseya Center.

Mitchell went through Monday’s practice but required additional post-practice treatment before speaking to media. He downplayed the severity compared to a similar injury earlier in January (which sidelined him for eight of 10 games and limited his effectiveness in the two he played):
“It’s not as bad. Definitely kind of like the same pain a little bit, but definitely not as bad.”
The collision occurred near midcourt as Mitchell chased Rockets guard Reed Sheppard. He leaned shoulder-first into the screen—instinct overriding caution:
“I try to play the same way. I try not to change anything up… He just got me. I’ve been going through screens after the injury for a minute now and it hasn’t really bothered me. This time he just got me.”
Head coach Erik Spoelstra defended Mitchell’s approach, noting it’s simply how he’s wired:
“He’s just trying to get over the screen. And then if there’s an extra hit, because he’s so aggressive on the ball, there’s going to be some kind of collision… I actually think a lot of those, more of them could be called. But I think they think he’s foul-baiting, which I would disagree on.”
Mitchell accepted the officials’ perspective:
“I think most of the time I should get illegal-screen calls, but they can’t call every single time. I understand that… You can’t play the game like that.”

Playoff Race Tightens – But Spoelstra Shuts Down Standings Talk The Heat’s win, combined with weekend losses by Orlando and Philadelphia, tightened the middle of the Eastern Conference playoff/play-in race. Yet Spoelstra refused to engage with standings scenarios:
“I’m not even going to talk about that stuff anymore because that hasn’t worked for us… Whatever. I’m just going to find whatever works for this group right now.”
He emphasized staying present:
“Staying in the present moment is the only thing I can focus on right now with this group. We had a very good practice today. I thought we got better. And that’s it.”
Up Next Miami hosts the 15-45 Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday and Thursday nights—prime opportunities to gain ground if Mitchell can play through the shoulder issue. His aggressive style is a hallmark of his game, but the Heat will monitor closely to avoid a repeat of January’s prolonged absence.
For a team fighting for positioning in a crowded East, Mitchell’s availability could be pivotal in the final stretch.
