Australian sensation Josh Giddey has officially wiped Scottie Pippen’s name off the Chicago Bulls’ all-time triple-double list — and now the only name left standing in his path is the greatest of all time: Michael Jordan.
In a 126-110 loss to the Sacramento Kings at the Golden 1 Center, the 23-year-old point guard dropped his 16th triple-double in a Bulls uniform with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. That performance didn’t just pad the stat sheet — it propelled Giddey past Pippen into sole second place on the franchise’s historic list.
Pippen? Gone. Erased. Just like that.
After drawing level with the Bulls legend last week against the Milwaukee Bucks, Giddey now sits alone in second with 16 triple-doubles. Only MJ’s legendary 28 remain ahead of him.
And at just 23 years old, in only his second season with Chicago after arriving from the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Alex Caruso trade, the former Adelaide 36ers Next Star has all the time in the world to hunt down the GOAT.
The Bulls have made their intentions crystal clear: they’re building the future around Giddey. They shipped out former backcourt mate Coby White to the Charlotte Hornets and locked the young Aussie in with a massive four-year, $100 million contract extension this offseason. Add rising star Matas Buzelis to the mix, and Chicago is all-in on the Giddey era.
Senior NBA writer for The Athletic, Sam Vecenie, recently broke it down on the Cut to the Jase podcast, saying the Bulls are fully committed to their young star.
“They’re definitely going to build around him and Matas Buzelis… I think they’re definitely all in on building around Josh,” Vecenie said.
He highlighted just how difficult it is to be a primary on-ball creator in today’s NBA, but believes Giddey has the tools to thrive in the right system.
“There are days where his transition ability, his ability to grab and go on the break, his vision, his size, his improved shooting ability off the catch really shows up and he can go for 25 and 10 and he looks like a definite all-star moving forward,” Vecenie explained.
However, he noted that Giddey is scheme-dependent and will need to continue developing, particularly his pull-up jumper, to reach consistent All-Star level.
Giddey is currently putting up career-high numbers: 17.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 8.4 assists per game while knocking down 37.4% of his threes. Despite the recent All-Star snub, the Melbourne product is showing every sign that he’s only scratching the surface of his potential.
Michael Jordan’s record once looked untouchable. But with the way Josh Giddey is playing — and with the entire Bulls organization building around him — that 28 triple-double mark is suddenly looking a lot more vulnerable than anyone could have imagined.
Watch out, Chicago. History is being rewritten in real time — and it’s an Australian doing the damage.
