‘Better than MJ’: Josh Giddey closes in on Michael Jordan’s historic Bulls record

Michael Jordan is widely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time, and his legendary tenure with the Chicago Bulls includes six NBA championships and countless individual records. However, in one surprising statistical category, Australian sensation Josh Giddey is rapidly closing the gap and positioning himself to challenge the GOAT’s mark on the Bulls’ all-time leaderboard.

Giddey, the 23-year-old point guard, has now climbed to second place on the Chicago Bulls’ list of most triple-doubles in franchise history. He achieved this milestone on Monday (AEDT) with his 16th triple-double in a Bulls uniform during a 126-110 loss to the Sacramento Kings.

In that game, Giddey delivered a solid all-around performance with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. This marked his ninth triple-double of the 2025-26 season and pushed him past Bulls icon Scottie Pippen, who had 15 triple-doubles during his storied career in Chicago.

Only Michael Jordan remains ahead of Giddey, with 28 triple-doubles accumulated over his 930 regular-season games with the Bulls. Jordan’s dominance helped define an era of excellence, but Giddey’s efficiency in reaching this level stands out dramatically. The young Aussie has notched his 16 triple-doubles in just 112 games—a fraction of the time it took Jordan.

This pace highlights Giddey’s exceptional playmaking, rebounding, and versatility as a floor general. Despite the Bulls’ struggles—sitting 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 26-37 record and out of playoff contention after a tough stretch since the trade deadline—Giddey has been a consistent bright spot. He recently returned from a minor ankle injury and immediately returned to stuffing the stat sheet.

A triple-double occurs when a player reaches double figures in points, rebounds, and assists in a single game. Giddey’s ability to consistently achieve this feat has drawn comparisons to elite facilitators, and his rapid ascent on the Bulls’ record books has sparked excitement among fans and media alike. Headlines proclaiming him as potentially “better than MJ” in this niche stat reflect the buzz around his production in such a short span.

The Bulls’ next challenge comes on Wednesday against the Golden State Warriors, offering Giddey another opportunity to add to his tally and continue chipping away at Jordan’s record. While catching MJ’s 28 will require sustained excellence, Giddey’s trajectory suggests he could make history in Chicago sooner than many expected.

For now, the Australian star is proving that even in a rebuilding phase, individual brilliance can shine through—and he’s doing it in historic fashion.
