Chelsea fans may have a surprise reason to smile as one of their major summer signings looks set to deliver a timely blow to Arsenal’s Champions League ambitions.
Geovany Quenda, the highly-rated 18-year-old Portuguese winger signed by Chelsea from Sporting CP for nearly £44 million last summer, is closing in on a return from injury — and could be available to face Arsenal in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final next week.

The teenager suffered a metatarsal fracture in December and underwent surgery, before beginning a rehabilitation programme at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground in collaboration with his parent club Sporting CP. While recovering in the UK, Quenda used the time productively: improving his English, speaking with coach Liam Rosenior, and sorting out his housing arrangements ahead of his permanent move to Stamford Bridge this summer.
After nearly four months on the sidelines, the Portugal Under-21 international has now returned to Portugal to put the final touches on his recovery. According to football.london, Quenda is hopeful of being fit for selection when Sporting CP host Arsenal on Tuesday, April 7.
The timing could prove awkward for Mikel Arteta’s side. Arsenal remain unbeaten in the Champions League this season and will enter the tie as strong favourites. However, the Gunners may now have to contend with a fresh and motivated Quenda, who will be desperate to impress both his current and future employers.
Sporting CP will have a slight preparation advantage after the international break. Rui Borges’ team face Santa Clara on Friday night, while Arsenal do not play until Saturday evening in the FA Cup against Southampton. Still, Arteta has made no secret of his determination to win the competition.
Speaking ahead of Arsenal’s last-16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen, the Spaniard declared that his side should be considered among Europe’s elite: “I believe so. This is football and you have to show it tomorrow night… The players certainly have more experience in the competition now. We have to perform.”
Earlier in the season, Arteta also spoke openly about his ultimate ambition. In September 2025, he said: “With our long history, how difficult it is because we haven’t won it yet, and that’s the opportunity… That’s how I see it. Pressure is the opportunity that drives that energy… The big clubs try seven, eight, nine times, and they maybe win two. So in this competition, it’s going to be one that you fail much more than you succeed. That’s the nature of it. That’s the history of our club, and that’s what we want to change.”
For Chelsea supporters, the possibility of Quenda returning in time to potentially disrupt Arsenal’s European campaign represents a fascinating subplot. The young talent, who has already shown immense promise at Sporting, could now play a role in denting the trophy hopes of one of their London rivals — just months before he officially becomes a Chelsea player.
Whether he features or not, Quenda’s imminent return marks a significant positive step in his development, setting the stage for what many expect to be an exciting future at Stamford Bridge.
