Kristaps Porzingis is heading into a pivotal offseason with his future still completely up in the air — and despite the Golden State Warriors’ public interest in keeping him long-term, the veteran forward just delivered a brutally honest assessment that raises major red flags about his stay in the Bay Area.
After Thursday’s 118-111 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Porzingis made it clear he is not ready to commit to the Warriors and is keeping all options open for free agency.
“It’s hard to say,” Porzingis told The Athletic. “Of course, it would be nice for me to say I want to continue here. But the reality is I didn’t have a good year at all. I barely showed what I’m capable of. So I have to see what’s out there.”
That honest admission speaks volumes. While the Warriors have tried to sell the idea that Porzingis is more than a short-term rental, the big man himself is far from convinced.
Warriors Talk Big, But Reality Looks Different
Golden State’s general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. previously expressed strong interest, saying in March that the team views Porzingis as part of their long-term vision.
“We see him as more than a rental,” Dunleavy said. “We feel he can help our team this year, better our playoff position, and then moving forward fits what we are looking for.”
However, Porzingis’ comments suggest he isn’t buying into that vision just yet. His production has been decent since the midseason trade — averaging 17.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 12 games — but the results tell a troubling story. The Warriors are just 4-8 in those contests, and Porzingis carries a minus-10 plus-minus rating. The fit simply hasn’t clicked.
The Curry Factor: The Real Test That Could End It All
The biggest threat to Porzingis’ Warriors future arrives this weekend. Stephen Curry is expected to return to the lineup on Sunday after missing significant time, and the limited window to build chemistry before the postseason could prove decisive.
Porzingis himself acknowledged the uncertainty, saying, “Who knows? Maybe we get out there and we can’t play together.” While he tried to stay optimistic, claiming they “will click” and that Curry’s gravity will make things easier, the truth is the pairing remains completely unproven.
Given how poorly Golden State has performed with Porzingis on the floor so far, Curry’s return could expose major spacing, defensive, or chemistry issues that make a long-term deal look risky for both sides.
Health, Conditioning, and the Harsh Reality
Still working his way back from multiple injury-plagued seasons, Porzingis admitted his main focus has been simply getting into “decent shape.” He also dealt with an illness early in his Warriors stint, reportedly linked to his POTS diagnosis. While he praised the team’s medical staff and Rick Celebrini, saying “I believe I’m in incredible hands here,” that confidence may not be enough to overcome on-court struggles.
With only a handful of games left in the regular season, Porzingis is under pressure to show more. His current form, combined with the looming Curry reunion, suggests his time in Golden State could be shorter than the Warriors hoped.
The opportunity is there in the Bay Area, but after Porzingis’ own honest words, his future with the Warriors is suddenly looking very uncertain — and Curry’s return might be the moment that decides it.
