The latest drama surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks has sent fresh warning signals to the Golden State Warriors front office as they prepare for a critical offseason.
The Warriors were among the most aggressive teams trying to pry Antetokounmpo away from Milwaukee before February’s trade deadline, and this new controversy over the superstar’s playing status has significantly increased the chances of a major summer trade.

Antetokounmpo has not appeared in Milwaukee’s last 10 games and has effectively been shut down for the remainder of the season. However, the two-time MVP has now publicly expressed his deep frustration with the franchise’s decision.
“For somebody to come and tell me to not play or not to compete, it’s like a slap in my face. So, I don’t know where the relationship goes from there,” Antetokounmpo said. “I don’t know what game is being played right here, I just don’t wanna be a part of it.”
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the NBA has launched an investigation into the situation after the Bucks and Antetokounmpo gave conflicting accounts regarding his availability. The team told league officials they believe Giannis is not medically ready to play and that he actually wants to compete, while Giannis informed investigators that he is eager to play but the Bucks have refused to clear him.
Antetokounmpo has appeared in just six of Milwaukee’s past 33 games and has played only 36 games all season, averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists on an elite 62.4% shooting from the field.
The 31-year-old’s future was already the biggest storyline heading into the trade deadline, with the Warriors and several other contenders aggressively pursuing him — only for the Bucks to turn down all offers.
This latest episode points to a relationship that has clearly broken down, highlighted by poor communication. Antetokounmpo emphasized that “nobody has ever approached me about not playing or whatever the plan is.”
With just one guaranteed year left on his contract, Antetokounmpo is expected to wield significant leverage over his future this summer, including whether he stays in Milwaukee or forces a trade — and to which destination.
For the Warriors, Antetokounmpo remains at the very top of their wishlist heading into the offseason. However, acquiring the superstar would be complex and would likely require a sign-and-trade, especially since Golden State currently has only six players under contract for next season.
As the situation in Milwaukee continues to unravel, the Warriors are once again on high alert — and potentially on the verge of their biggest opportunity in years.
