BOMBSHELL IN DENVER: Michael Malone just flipped the script with a move Nuggets fans didn’t see coming

When the Denver Nuggets made the shocking decision to fire Michael Malone with just three games left in the 2024-25 regular season, most fans and NBA observers assumed the veteran coach would quickly land with another NBA team. After all, Malone had led the Nuggets to their first-ever NBA Championship in 2023, compiled over 500 wins as an NBA head coach, and built a reputation as one of the league’s toughest and most respected tacticians.

What no one saw coming was Malone’s next chapter unfolding not in an NBA arena, but on the sidelines of the Dean Smith Center.

On Monday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that North Carolina “intends” to hire the 54-year-old as the Tar Heels’ next head basketball coach. While the deal isn’t fully official yet, the move would bring a swift end to UNC’s two-week coaching search that began after the program fired Hubert Davis following a disappointing first-round NCAA Tournament loss to VCU.

The Tar Heels had aggressively pursued Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd, but he opted to stay with the Wildcats after agreeing to an extension last week. Michigan’s Dusty May, another top target, made it clear over the weekend that he had no interest in leaving Ann Arbor — especially with the Wolverines set to play in the national championship game Monday night.

Earlier in the day, reports indicated that Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan had emerged as UNC’s top remaining candidate, with the transfer portal set to open Tuesday. Instead, the program pivoted dramatically to Malone, a coach with zero recent college experience.

It’s been a full 25 years since Malone last coached at the collegiate level, when he served as an assistant at Manhattan. Taking over a blue-blood program like North Carolina — in the era of NIL deals and the transfer portal — represents a massive leap. Yet if anyone has the edge, basketball IQ, and winning pedigree to restore the Tar Heels to elite status, it’s hard to bet against Malone.

This hire marks a clear break from tradition. North Carolina chose not to stay within its family tree and instead went with one of the most accomplished outsiders possible.

For Nuggets fans, the news feels like a gut punch. Many expected Malone to be a hot name on the NBA coaching carousel this offseason. Instead, he’s trading NBA sidelines for college basketball’s most passionate atmosphere. His decision may stem partly from personal ties: his oldest daughter, Bridget Malone, plays volleyball for the Tar Heels, giving him familiarity with the Chapel Hill campus and its athletic culture.

It’s a stunning plot twist. Seeing Michael Malone — the same intense coach who orchestrated Nikola Jokić’s rise and delivered Denver its lone title — patrolling the sidelines in Carolina blue will take some getting used to. But for a historic program hungry to reclaim its dominance, this unexpected gamble could prove to be exactly what the Tar Heels need.
