BOMBSHELL UPDATE: Chelsea vs Man Utd injury news as 8 ruled out and 3 doubts

Chelsea return to Premier League action on Saturday in one of the most pivotal fixtures of their campaign, as they host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. With the Blues still battling for a top-four finish—and a potential Champions League spot via fifth place—this clash feels like a must-win moment for Liam Rosenior’s side.

Trevoh Chalobah, Chelsea

Chelsea currently sit seven points adrift of Manchester United in third and Aston Villa in fourth, while trailing Liverpool in fifth by four points. Having lost their last three league outings, the pressure is mounting. For United, the game represents a golden opportunity to deal a blow to a direct rival while edging closer to securing their own Champions League qualification. The atmosphere at Stamford Bridge promises to be electric for what is shaping up as a high-stakes encounter.

Ahead of kick-off, here is the latest injury and suspension update for both squads.

Manchester United – Major defensive absences

United will be forced to reshuffle their backline significantly, with three key defenders unavailable.

  • Matthijs de Ligt remains sidelined until May as he continues his recovery from a back issue.
  • Lisandro Martínez is suspended after receiving a red card for serious foul play, which included pulling an opponent’s hair.
  • Harry Maguire is also unavailable due to suspension following a recent red card.

Adding to United’s concerns, Patrick Dorgu is out with a hamstring problem and is not expected back until May.

In midfield, there is some uncertainty around Kobbie Mainoo. Interim head coach Michael Carrick recently commented: “Over the last day or so, Kobbie just had an issue in training… It seems small, but big enough to keep him out tonight. It wasn’t worth the risk, to be honest, so we’re hoping it’s pretty small, and it won’t be too long.”

Chelsea – Long-term issues and key doubts

Rosenior’s squad is also depleted, with several players still working their way back to full fitness.

  • Levi Colwill continues his rehabilitation and is bidding to return before the end of the season, but he is not yet ready for selection. Rosenior noted last week: “Levi is training but still needs to overcome some hurdles in terms of selection.”
  • Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is sidelined until at least May after sustaining a hamstring injury a couple of weeks ago.
  • Trevoh Chalobah is making progress but remains over a week away from a potential return. Rosenior said: “Trevoh is working really, really hard and is back on the pitch.”
  • Filip Jorgensen is out following minor groin surgery at the end of last month.

There are, however, more positive signs for two important players:

  • Enzo Fernández is expected to be available. Rosenior provided an update: “The hurdle I spoke about [during Friday’s press conference]. Enzo wanted to have a conversation with the leadership group… He has spoken with me, the leadership group and all of the players, and we look forward to welcoming him back.”
  • Reece James missed the previous match against City but has been training for a couple of weeks and could be in contention for selection here.

A defining weekend at Stamford Bridge

With eight players ruled out across both teams and three others carrying doubts, squad depth and tactical adaptability will be tested to the limit. Chelsea know they cannot afford another defeat if they are to keep their Champions League hopes alive, while United will view this as the perfect chance to pull further clear of their London rivals.

The combination of high stakes, injury-enforced changes, and the historic rivalry ensures Saturday’s fixture will be one of the most compelling of the Premier League season. All eyes will be on how Rosenior and Carrick navigate their respective selection headaches under the Stamford Bridge lights.
