LeBron James and his son, LeBron “Bronny” James Jr., continue to make sports history.
On Saturday, April 18, the pair became the first father-son duo to play in an NBA playoff game.
Both playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron, 41, and Bronny, 21, helped their team score a 107-98 victory over the Houston Rockets.
After the game, LeBron spoke with reporters about how it felt to play alongside his eldest son, whom he shares with wife Savannah James.

“There’s a lot of crazy things that’s been going on this year,” the forward said, per video from ESPN. “I mean, I was on the floor with my son in a playoff game. That’s probably the craziest thing that’s ever happened to me in my career.”
“It was just so cool to be out there with him,” LeBron continued, adding that Bronny’s brother Bryce, sister Zhuri, mom and grandma all watched the game.
“That’s just insane. My mom gets to watch her son and her grandson during the playoffs. That’s crazy,” the NBA champ said.
A Family Affair
The moment was not just significant for LeBron and Bronny, but for the entire James family. Savannah James, LeBron’s wife and Bronny’s mother, watched from the stands. Bryce, Zhuri, and LeBron’s mother, Gloria, were also in attendance.
Three generations of James family in the building, watching history unfold.
For LeBron, who has often spoken about the importance of family, this was the culmination of a dream he first expressed years ago. He wanted to play with his son. He wanted to share the court with him. And now, he has done it on the biggest stage of all: the NBA playoffs.
Another Record for LeBron
LeBron also made history during the game as the oldest player to record a double-double with points and assists in the playoffs, according to Real App.
He has been with the Lakers for eight seasons since 2018. LeBron previously played for the Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
At 41 years old, LeBron is still adding to his legacy. He is still breaking records. He is still doing things that have never been done before.
And now, he is doing them alongside his son.
Bronny’s Journey to the Playoffs
Bronny, meanwhile, joined the Lakers in 2024 during the second NBA draft on a four-year contract with the team. He previously played one shortened season at the University of Southern California.
His path to the NBA was not straightforward. He suffered a cardiac arrest during a workout at USC in July 2023, a terrifying moment that threatened his basketball future. He recovered. He rehabbed. He fought his way back.
Now, he is playing playoff minutes for the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Father-Son Dynamic
On April 6, LeBron appeared visibly frustrated with the second-year Laker after he threw him a bad pass during the team’s 134-128 loss to the Dallas Mavericks.
Game commentators called out the father-son interaction during the broadcast. “I love that look. That was not just LeBron the veteran, that was also LeBron the dad!” the commentators said. “Watch his look at his son … bounce pass!”
The moment went viral, with fans debating whether LeBron was being a tough teammate or a tough father. In reality, he was being both.
A Season of Firsts
Weeks earlier, the duo made history with the first father-son assist in an NBA game when the Lakers took on the Brooklyn Nets.
At the time, Bronny hit a 3-pointer after a pass from his dad in the second quarter of the game, and the Lakers went on to a 116-99 victory.
Back in October 2024, LeBron and Bronny made NBA history as the first father and son to play together at an NBA game.
Now, they have added another chapter: the first father-son duo to play together in the playoffs.
The Verdict: A Legacy Cemented
LeBron James has won four championships. He has been named MVP four times. He is the all-time leading scorer in NBA history.
But when asked about the craziest thing that has ever happened to him in his career, he did not mention a buzzer-beater or a Finals performance. He mentioned playing with his son.
“That’s probably the craziest thing that’s ever happened to me in my career.”
For LeBron, the game has always been about more than basketball. It has been about family. It has been about legacy. It has been about creating moments that will outlast the game itself.
On Saturday, he created another one.
LeBron and Bronny James, father and son, on the playoff floor together. It was history. It was family. And it was beautiful.
