CHELSEA’S SECRET WEAPON SAID NO! Rayan Cherki SHOCKED the Blues by TURNING DOWN a HUSH-HUSH trial, a former star SPILLS EVERYTHING.

In the cutthroat world of football academies, where raw talent can emerge from nowhere and change a club’s future in an instant, one secret trial at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground left a lasting impression more than a decade later.

Rayan Cherki had secret trial at Chelsea but turned them down as former player reveals all

According to former Chelsea youth player Miles Leaburn, now a striker for Charlton Athletic, a 12-year-old Rayan Cherki arrived from France in 2015 for a discreet trial while still registered with Lyon. Lyon reportedly had no idea their young prospect was even in London. What happened next still stands out as one of the most memorable moments from Leaburn’s nine-year spell in Chelsea’s academy.

“He came over from France and was rainbow-flicking guys in training,” Leaburn told The Sun. “I was thinking, ‘Oh my God, this is incredible.’ He honestly rejected playing for Chelsea because he probably found it too easy. He was miles better than anyone else — absolute quality. That was one of the standout moments of the eight years or so I spent at Chelsea.”

The anecdote paints a vivid picture of a prodigious talent who, even as a pre-teen, operated on a different level from his peers at one of England’s most elite youth setups. Cherki’s flair, technical brilliance, and audacious skill moves reportedly left coaches and fellow academy players in awe — so much so that the youngster ultimately walked away, seemingly unimpressed by the challenge on offer.

Leaburn, who was released by Chelsea at 16 before forging a professional career at Charlton (where he has since made over 100 appearances), described the episode as unforgettable. He also recalled the glamour of Chelsea’s academy in those days, including being introduced to first-team stars like John Terry, Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba, and Frank Lampard when he first joined at age seven after being scouted from Cray Wanderers via a development centre in Kidbrooke.

Cherki, for his part, has never publicly spoken about the alleged Chelsea trial. Instead, he remained loyal to Lyon, progressing through their ranks to make 146 senior appearances. He became a first-team regular at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais before securing a high-profile £32 million move to Manchester City last summer.

The Frenchman was not short of elite interest even as a teenager. According to reports, Manchester United also made an approach for Cherki when he was playing at under-15 level, but he chose to stay with his boyhood club in France before debuting for Lyon’s senior side in 2019.

Now 22, Cherki has emerged as one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season for Manchester City. His creativity, dribbling ability, and vision have lit up the pitch — though fans are still waiting for that signature rainbow flick to make its competitive debut in English football. Given his history, it may only be a matter of time.

Leaburn’s revelation adds another layer to Cherki’s already compelling journey: a player so gifted that even a secretive trial at Chelsea felt insufficiently challenging. For the Blues, it represents a tantalising “what if” — a secret weapon who slipped through their fingers and is now shining for one of their biggest rivals.

In the unpredictable world of youth development, stories like this serve as a reminder that talent doesn’t always follow the expected path. Sometimes, the brightest prospects simply decide the stage isn’t big enough — yet.
