The NBA just got a NEW VILLAIN. Thompson’s “dirty play” on Reaves has the WHOLE LEAGUE TALKING. REPLAY PROVES IT.

In a game the Los Angeles Lakers dominated from start to finish, one controversial moment in the final minutes threatened to overshadow a convincing 98-78 Game 6 victory over the Houston Rockets that propelled L.A. into the second round of the playoffs.

With the Lakers leading comfortably by 24 points at 86-62, a routine rebound battle turned ugly. Rockets guard Amen Thompson shoved Austin Reaves to the floor while contesting a loose ball. Reaves limped off the court at the 5:55 mark of the fourth quarter and did not return. Thompson was assessed a loose-ball foul, but many in the Lakers organization, fanbase, and across the NBA felt the punishment was far too lenient.

Replays of the incident only intensified the scrutiny. The shove appeared forceful and unnecessary given the score and stage of the game, prompting accusations of a “dirty play” from observers. Social media erupted almost immediately.

Lakers Fans Rip Amen Thompson

Lakers fans demand accountability

Reactions poured in across platforms, with many calling for significant discipline:

  • “AMEN THOMPSON NEEDS TO BE SUSPENDED FOR THIS!!!!! LETS PRAY AUSTIN REAVES IS OK 🙏” (Bron Muse)
  • “UNBELIEVABLY DIRTY PLAY BY AMEN THOMPSON ON AUSTIN REAVES???? HURT HIM FOR NO REASON 🤬” (Lakers Muse)
  • “HE NEEDS A 25 GAME SUSPENSION FOR NEXT SEASON THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!”

Even some self-described fans of Thompson expressed disappointment: “I’m a fan of Amen, but man he can be such a sore loser.” Others framed it more broadly: “Some people just don’t know how to take an L.”

The incident has the potential to linger into the offseason. With the Lakers advancing and the Rockets’ season over, calls for the league office to review the play and issue a suspension at the start of the 2026-27 campaign have grown louder. Whether the NBA views the shove as a flagrant escalation or simply a hard-nosed basketball play in a heated playoff environment will be a key test of the league’s player safety standards.

Reaves brushes off injury concerns

Fortunately, the scare proved short-lived for Reaves. In his postgame press conference, the Lakers guard downplayed any lingering issues. Returning to the starting lineup for the first time since suffering an oblique injury on April 2, Reaves delivered a solid performance: 15 points, two assists, three blocks, and 50% shooting from the field.

His ability to contribute meaningfully in a blowout victory — and then walk off any immediate concerns — provided relief to a Lakers fanbase already anxious about depth heading deeper into the postseason.

LeBron James steals the show

While the Thompson-Reaves moment dominated postgame conversation, LeBron James once again reminded everyone why he remains one of the most remarkable athletes in sports. At 41 years old and in his 23rd NBA season, James posted 28 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds while finishing a team-high +26 in the win.

Reaves, who has shared the floor with James for several seasons now, could only marvel at his teammate afterward.

“I told him ‘You’re insane – the stuff you’re doing is … not normal.’ Age, whatever, he’s been in the league for 23 years, the way he controls the game?” Reaves said, via Mike Trudell. “It’s impressive. I don’t think you can say with words how special (it is). I’m happy I don’t have to play against him.”

Looking ahead

The Lakers now advance with momentum but must monitor Reaves’ status closely. A full recovery would bolster an already dangerous roster featuring James and a supporting cast capable of making noise in the Western Conference.

For Amen Thompson and the Rockets, the moment raises questions about discipline and reputation. In the court of public opinion — and potentially the league office — one play in a lost game may follow Thompson longer than the final score itself.

As the playoffs intensify, this Lakers-Rockets series may ultimately be remembered less for Houston’s competitive spirit and more for the moment that turned Amen Thompson into the NBA’s newest lightning rod.
