BOMBSHELL IN THE BAY! Warriors Secretly Plot to Dump Fan Favorite “The Glove Jr.” – 33-Year-Old Defensive Dog Put on Notice After Career-Best 73 Games!

Golden State’s push for youth could leave Gary Payton II facing an uncertain future despite a strong late-season surge.

OAKLAND — Steve Kerr’s repeated calls for “younger legs” have put several veteran Warriors on notice heading into free agency, with fan-favorite defensive specialist Gary Payton II among those most at risk.

Payton, 33, just completed one of the best seasons of his career, appearing in a career-high 73 games. Yet his age and the team’s desire to rejuvenate the roster for one more deep playoff run in the Stephen Curry era could force a difficult decision in the coming months.

After re-signing with the Warriors last offseason on a minimum deal — a sharp downgrade from his previous three-year, $27 million contract — Payton started slowly. Early DNPs and limited minutes tested his role. However, when injuries hit the roster from February onward, he seized the opportunity and delivered elite production.

From February 5 through the end of the season, Payton averaged 12.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.6 steals per game while shooting an outstanding 61.5% from the field. His explosive finishing around the rim returned as a signature weapon. Notably, much of this success came without Stephen Curry on the floor, helping to reshape perceptions that Payton was merely a beneficiary of playing alongside the two-time MVP.

That late-season tape will make him attractive to rival teams in free agency. Still, sources close to the situation indicate Payton would strongly prefer to remain with the only NBA franchise where he has won a championship in 2022 and carved out his identity as “The Glove Jr.”

Kerr’s “Younger Legs” Mandate

The writing on the wall comes directly from head coach Steve Kerr. The Warriors coach has publicly emphasized multiple times that the team cannot continue relying so heavily on players unable to handle back-to-backs or requiring frequent rest.

“We need some younger legs.”

Kerr’s comments signal a strategic shift. While the core still revolves around Curry (38), Draymond Green (36), and incoming veteran Jimmy Butler (36), with potential interest in bringing back soon-to-be 40-year-old Al Horford, the front office faces pressure to inject youth into the supporting cast.

Tough Choices Ahead

As a role player, Payton may find himself lower on the priority list despite his strong finish. The Warriors must navigate brutal roster decisions to balance their desire for youth with the need to stay competitive. Seth Curry is another veteran whose future appears tenuous, but the ripple effects could easily reach Payton.

Golden State’s front office must weigh Payton’s proven chemistry, locker-room presence, and defensive versatility against the realities of age and minutes management. His ability to thrive without Curry boosts his market value externally, yet internal loyalty remains a factor.

There remains a strong possibility that Payton has done enough to earn another contract in the Bay. However, the franchise’s clear signaling of a new directional emphasis on athleticism and sustainability has left the 2022 champion justifiably nervous about his long-term fate with the team.

As free agency looms, all eyes will be on how Golden State reconciles its nostalgia for beloved veterans with the cold arithmetic of roster construction in pursuit of another title window. For Gary Payton II, a player who has repeatedly bet on himself and delivered, the next few weeks could determine whether his Warriors story gets another chapter or comes to a bittersweet close.
