Valentin Barco has issued an emotional farewell to Strasbourg, the club where he spent the last 18 months under BlueCo ownership, just days after completing his transfer to Chelsea.
The 21-year-old Argentine defender posted a heartfelt statement on social media accompanied by a series of photographs documenting his time at the French club, including touching images with his young daughter Gemma, who was born on March 28, 2025, and featured in the Strasbourg kit.
In the message, Barco expressed deep gratitude to the club that helped him develop after his move from Brighton. He paid special tribute to former Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior — who briefly held the Chelsea job before being sacked after just 104 days — as well as current head coach Gary O’Neil.
“Today I have to say goodbye to this club, which I joined with great enthusiasm,” Barco wrote. “In this year and a half, I’ve had some wonderful times, including the best of our lives. On March 28, 2025, the day Gemma was born. I always gave my all on the pitch in every match for this shirt.
“I want to thank my team-mates who made everything easier for me, Liam and his staff for the trust they placed in me and for making me the player I am. Gary and his staff for understanding me and helping me improve, everyone who works at the club and supports us every day, and the fans for the affection they have always shown me.
“From afar, I will support you and cheer you on so you always win. I am incredibly grateful to Strasbourg, and my family and I will return whenever we can; it’s a very special place in our lives. Thank you so much for this year and a half, and best of luck for the future. Merci Strasbourg.”
The message carries a genuine warmth and sense of closure, reflecting Barco’s appreciation for a club that became more than just a temporary stop.
A Familiar Path in the BlueCo Network
Barco’s journey to Stamford Bridge follows a well-trodden route within the multi-club model. He broke through at Boca Juniors before Brighton signed him for a reported £7.7 million. Limited first-team opportunities at the Amex Stadium led to loan spells at Sevilla and then Strasbourg, before a permanent move to the Ligue 1 side for just under £8.7 million last summer.
Chelsea are understood to be paying Strasbourg a similar fee to secure his services, with the internal nature of the BlueCo group making negotiations relatively straightforward. The deal was reportedly agreed while Rosenior was still in charge at Chelsea, adding another layer of irony to the situation.
The Brutal Truth at Stamford Bridge
While Barco’s tribute is sincere and touching, the reality awaiting him in West London is far more challenging. With Rosenior dismissed after only 104 days and Xabi Alonso now installed as head coach, the 21-year-old’s role in the first-team plans remains highly uncertain.
Chelsea’s squad is packed with talent and competition for places is fierce, particularly in the wide defensive and midfield areas where Barco has operated. The Argentine will need to impress Alonso quickly if he is to avoid becoming another young signing who struggles for minutes at Stamford Bridge.
For now, Barco’s immediate focus shifts to international football. He has been included in Argentina’s 55-man preliminary squad ahead of the summer’s World Cup and remains hopeful of making the final cut for the defending champions.
His departure from Strasbourg marks the end of a significant chapter — one that saw him become a father and establish himself as a professional in Europe. Whether his next chapter at Chelsea delivers the breakthrough his talent suggests or adds another detour to an already nomadic young career remains to be seen.
