Despite BlueCo’s staggering investment of well over £1 billion in rebuilding the Chelsea squad, the club’s lack of a reliable, top-level striker has remained a glaring weakness for seasons. Now, incoming head coach Xabi Alonso is determined to address the issue head-on — and he has already drawn a firm line in the sand.
According to reports, the Spaniard made signing a “top-quality striker” a non-negotiable condition before agreeing to take charge at Stamford Bridge. BlueCo, eager to secure the highly regarded former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder, honoured that demand. As a result, Chelsea are now prepared to offload one of their recent signings to reshape their attacking options ahead of Alonso’s official arrival on July 1.
That player is Liam Delap.
The 23-year-old, who arrived from Ipswich Town last summer in a £30 million deal, was viewed by many as a promising long-term prospect capable of leading the line. However, his first season in West London has fallen well short of expectations. Delap has struggled to adapt to the intensity and tactical demands of a club expected to challenge for major trophies, reinforcing the view that he is not yet ready for a starring role at this level.
Sources suggest Alonso has already made up his mind on the forward. With the new manager prioritising proven quality over potential, Delap has become the odd man out in Chelsea’s forward planning. Selling the striker would free up resources and squad space as the club shifts towards a more immediate, results-driven approach under Alonso — moving away from the patient, youth-focused narrative that has defined recent windows.
Interest from elsewhere
Despite his disappointing campaign at Chelsea, Delap remains an attractive proposition for other Premier League sides. Still only 23 and with evident talent, his availability could come at a reduced fee compared to the price Chelsea paid just 12 months ago.
Everton and Newcastle United are among the clubs showing strong interest. Newcastle, in particular, have encountered their own attacking issues this season and could view Delap as a cost-effective, high-upside option to bolster their squad.
A new hitman on the horizon
Regardless of Delap’s destination, Alonso is expected to push aggressively for a new centre-forward with a proven record on the biggest stages. One name already emerging as an early target is Brentford’s Igor Thiago. The Brazilian has enjoyed an outstanding season, netting 22 goals in 37 Premier League appearances and showcasing the clinical finishing and physical presence Chelsea have lacked.
The contrast is telling. While Chelsea supporters have grown accustomed to talk of long-term projects and squad development, Alonso’s arrival signals a potential change in direction: a willingness to make decisive, high-impact moves to fix immediate deficiencies.
Whether Delap departs this summer or fights for his future, one thing is clear — the striker situation at Stamford Bridge is finally set for a major overhaul. For a club with Champions League ambitions, the Alonso era cannot come soon enough.
