Chelsea have moved decisively to reshape their future by appointing Xabi Alonso as their new head coach on a four-year contract. The 44-year-old Spaniard will officially begin his role at Stamford Bridge on July 1, granting him and the club’s sporting leadership critical time to craft an ambitious recruitment strategy ahead of the summer transfer window.
The appointment has already sparked intense speculation about a major squad overhaul, with European football expert Andy Brassell outlining a dream trio of signings for Alonso that could transform Chelsea’s fortunes. At the forefront of the rumoured targets is none other than Kylian Mbappé.
Mbappé enjoyed a highly productive working relationship with Alonso during their time together at Real Madrid, where the French superstar netted 30 goals and provided five assists in just 28 appearances across all competitions. When Alonso departed Los Blancos earlier this year, the 27-year-old forward publicly described the experience as a “pleasure,” praising the coach for instilling confidence in him from day one.
However, Mbappé’s situation at the Santiago Bernabéu has grown uncertain. Under temporary coach Alvaro Arbeloa towards the end of the season, the World Cup winner reportedly fell out of favour, describing himself as the “fourth-choice” striker. With his future in Madrid clouded, Brassell believes Stamford Bridge could offer the perfect landing spot.
Speaking to talkSPORT, the respected analyst laid out what he sees as the ideal transfer window for Alonso, emphasising the need to blend youthful talent with vital experience.
“They need experience. There’s no doubt about that,” Brassell said. “He’s [Alonso] so good at developing young players. He needs experience as well.”
Brassell highlighted Alonso’s success at Bayer Leverkusen, where seasoned professionals like Granit Xhaka played pivotal roles, and suggested replicating that formula in West London.
Top of his wishlist is a new top-class goalkeeper. He identified Gregor Kobel of Borussia Dortmund as the standout candidate: “He’s a senior player, a great leader and just one of the very best goalkeepers in the world. So, I think for me, he’s a shoo-in.”
For the defence, Brassell pointed to Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan as an ideal fit. “We know that he’s likely to leave Inter this summer. Barcelona would like him, but I doubt they really have the money. He’s composed, adaptable, good on the ball, good at bringing it out. Works in a back three, which is very much Xabi Alonso’s jam.” At 27, Bastoni offers the perfect blend of experience and long-term potential.
And the third major target? Kylian Mbappé.
The prospect of pairing Alonso with his former star striker has sent waves of excitement through the Chelsea fanbase. The Frenchman’s elite quality, combined with his prior chemistry with the new manager, could prove a game-changing addition as Chelsea look to challenge at the highest level once again.
Upon signing his four-year deal, Alonso made his ambitions for the club crystal clear.
“Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football, and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club,” he said. “From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”
“There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club, and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”
With Alonso’s proven track record of tactical sophistication and player development, and a potential influx of high-calibre reinforcements like Kobel, Bastoni, and Mbappé, Chelsea appear poised for a transformative era at Stamford Bridge. The summer ahead could mark the beginning of a bold new chapter for the Blues.
