Tennessee Volunteers fans have been itching for the Los Angeles Lakers to trade former UT standout guard Dalton Knecht. It appears their wish may finally be granted this offseason.
According to a new trade proposal from ESPN, the Los Angeles Lakers are set to move on from the former Tennessee star. The deal would send Knecht, along with Jarred Vanderbilt and a first-round pick, to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for center Daniel Gafford.
For Knecht, the change of scenery cannot come soon enough. At this point, playing for any team other than the Lakers would represent a significant step forward in his young NBA career.
The Lakers Have Badly Misused Dalton Knecht
Since being drafted by the Lakers, Knecht has been incredibly misused. The former Vol has dealt with inconsistent playing time, multiple assignments to the G-League, and frustrating stretches where he was called up only to sit on the bench.
Despite the challenges, Knecht showed clear potential as a rookie. Just a month into his professional career in 2024, he dropped a standout 37-point performance, proving he possesses the scoring ability to make an impact at the NBA level.
However, for reasons that remain unclear, the Lakers chose to treat the sharp-shooting guard like a journeyman role player rather than investing in his development. His playing time and production have declined sharply in his second season. Knecht averaged just 4.2 points per game in 10.2 minutes this past season, a noticeable drop from his rookie year numbers of 9.1 points and 19.2 minutes per game.
It is nearly impossible for a young player to develop rhythm and confidence with such limited and erratic opportunities. While no one expected Knecht to be a featured piece on a contending Lakers roster, the organization could have — and should have — carved out a consistent bench role for him. In that capacity, he likely would have provided valuable scoring punch and helped the team more than he was allowed to.
Instead, the Lakers have made their stance on Knecht abundantly clear through their actions. The writing has been on the wall for some time.
A Fresh Start Awaits
This proposed trade to the Dallas Mavericks offers Knecht exactly what he needs: a new environment where he can earn consistent minutes and rebuild his confidence as a professional scorer.
For Tennessee fans who watched Knecht light up the college ranks and cheered his early NBA flashes, seeing him leave the Lakers organization feels like a long-overdue development. While the specifics of his role in Dallas would still need to be determined, simply escaping the current situation in Los Angeles represents the best possible outcome for his growth and future prospects.
The wait appears to be over. If this ESPN-reported proposal comes to fruition, Dalton Knecht will finally get the opportunity to show what he can truly do in a more supportive environment.
