BOMBSHELL UPDATE: Bayern Munich’s £56M Nicolas Jackson Decision Leaves Chelsea With Major Summer Twist

Chelsea are braced for a significant summer subplot after Nicolas Jackson’s loan spell at Bayern Munich ended without the German giants triggering their £56million obligation-to-buy clause.

The 24-year-old Senegal international has now returned to Stamford Bridge, where new head coach Xabi Alonso will be given the chance to assess his long-term future during pre-season. The decision not to make Jackson’s move permanent represents a major twist in Chelsea’s forward planning for the 2026/27 campaign.

Jackson spent the 2025/26 season on loan in Bavaria. Bayern had an obligation to sign him permanently for around £56million if he reached a specific number of appearances — the exact threshold of which remains undisclosed. With that target unmet, the striker is back under Chelsea’s control, setting the stage for a high-stakes evaluation period.

Sources indicate that Alonso, who officially begins his role on July 1, will closely monitor Jackson alongside fellow centre-forward options Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, and Emmanuel Emegha. The Spanish tactician is expected to use pre-season friendlies to determine which strikers best fit his tactical vision.

Despite the loan move, Jackson retains a strong reputation within the Chelsea squad. His temporary exit last season reportedly stemmed from a fallout with former manager Enzo Maresca rather than any sporting shortcomings. Originally, the club had intended for Jackson to remain at Stamford Bridge and compete for the No.9 position alongside new arrivals.

Open to staying, but open to offers

While Chelsea are prepared to give the Senegal international a fair opportunity to impress, they have not entirely ruled out a sale before the end of the summer window. Should a compelling offer arrive, the club would consider cashing in on the forward.

Those close to Jackson’s camp say the player is open to staying at Stamford Bridge and fighting for his place, though a definitive decision on his future has yet to be reached.

One complicating factor is Jackson’s imminent involvement in the summer World Cup with Senegal. Alonso may have to wait until after the tournament to conduct a full assessment in training, but the new Chelsea manager is expected to pay close attention to Senegal’s matches. Fellow Chelsea prospect Mamadou Sarr is also set to feature for the African nation.

Pre-season plans

Chelsea will begin their pre-season preparations with a trip to Sydney in late July, followed by matches in Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The squad is scheduled to return to England roughly 10 days before the Premier League season kicks off on the weekend of August 22.

The situation leaves Chelsea with added flexibility — and complexity — in the transfer market. While Alonso inherits a young and talented group of strikers, the club must now decide whether Jackson still has a long-term role at Stamford Bridge or whether his future lies elsewhere.

For now, all eyes will be on how the 24-year-old performs upon his return, both during the World Cup and in the crucial weeks of pre-season under his new manager. What was expected to be a straightforward loan-to-buy has instead delivered one of the more intriguing storylines of Chelsea’s summer.
