The veteran center is about to be ruthlessly “kicked out” – nobody wants him! The NBA market is cold toward the name the Bulls are trying to offload.

The Chicago Bulls’ 2024-25 NBA season ended in disappointment, with a 39-43 record landing them 10th in the Eastern Conference. Their hopes of sneaking into the playoffs were dashed in the play-in tournament, where they suffered a 90-109 defeat to the Miami Heat. As the offseason unfolds, the Bulls are grappling with roster challenges, particularly in their efforts to trade veteran center Nikola Vucevic, whose market has gone ice-cold.

A Struggling Trade Market for Vucevic

Nikola Vucevic, acquired by the Bulls on March 25, 2021, in a blockbuster trade that sent Wendell Carter Jr., Otto Porter Jr., and two first-round draft picks to the Orlando Magic, has been a reliable performer. In the 2024-25 season, the soon-to-be 35-year-old averaged 18.5 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 3.5 assists across 73 regular-season games. However, his age and contract appear to be deterrents in the trade market.

According to Evan Sidery of Forbes, “The Bulls have had little luck generating a trade market for Nikola Vucevic. After demanding a 1st-round pick at the deadline, Chicago’s market for the soon to be 35-year-old has dried up.” With contending teams showing minimal interest, Vucevic’s desire to finish his career on a championship-caliber roster may push the Bulls toward a buyout as a last resort. This development marks a stark contrast to the high expectations that accompanied his arrival in Chicago, leaving the Bulls in a precarious position as they attempt to reshape their roster.

Josh Giddey’s Surprising Contract Demands

While the Bulls struggle to move Vucevic, another storyline has emerged with rising star Josh Giddey. Acquired in a trade that sent Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Giddey has quickly become a cornerstone for Chicago’s future. In the 2024-25 season, the young guard averaged 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists in 70 games, showcasing his versatility and playmaking ability.

However, Giddey’s offseason ambitions have raised eyebrows. According to Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, cited by Evan Sidery, Giddey is seeking a contract extension worth over $30 million annually, aiming to match or exceed the $30.1 million deal Jalen Suggs secured with the Orlando Magic. This bold request comes as Giddey approaches restricted free agency, signaling his intent to capitalize on his breakout season and secure a lucrative long-term deal.

What’s Next for the Bulls?

The Bulls find themselves at a crossroads. The inability to trade Vucevic could force a buyout, freeing up cap space but potentially leaving them without a return for a player who remains productive. Meanwhile, Giddey’s contract demands add another layer of complexity to Chicago’s offseason strategy. Balancing the development of young talents like Giddey with the need to move aging veterans like Vucevic will be critical as the Bulls aim to climb out of mediocrity and back into playoff contention.

The cold reality of the NBA market has left Chicago in a tough spot, with Vucevic’s future uncertain and Giddey’s ambitions looming large. As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on how the Bulls navigate these challenges to redefine their roster and future.
