RHOC Star Emily Simpson’s 10-Year-Old Son Diagnosed with an Eating Disorder – The Heartbreaking Truth Behind the Glamour!

In a candid and emotional revelation, Real Housewives of Orange County star Emily Simpson has opened up about a deeply personal struggle: her 10-year-old son, Luke, has been diagnosed with Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). Behind the glitz and glamour of reality TV, Simpson’s story unveils the raw challenges of parenting a child with a complex eating disorder, offering a glimpse into a world far removed from the Bravo spotlight.

ARFID, as described by the Cleveland Clinic, is far more than picky eating. It’s a condition rooted in intense anxiety around food, where individuals may avoid eating due to fears of choking, vomiting, or aversions to specific colors, textures, smells, or tastes. Unlike other eating disorders, ARFID isn’t driven by body image concerns or a desire to lose weight but by overwhelming sensory and psychological barriers. For Luke, this means a limited diet and a meticulous ritual of inspecting every piece of food before eating.

“He only eats a few different foods, and he’s very overwhelmed by texture, color, smells. He will only eat white rice,” Simpson, 49, shared in a heartfelt interview with People. “He has to inspect each piece of rice before he eats it. It’s beyond picky eating. A lot of control issues. It’s very overwhelming.”

Simpson’s journey as a mother navigating Luke’s diagnosis has been fraught with frustration and heartbreak. She recalled moments when Luke would cry, saying he was “starving” but still refuse to eat the food offered to him. “As a mom, that was so frustrating,” she admitted. “I didn’t know what to do because on one hand he’s crying and telling me he’s starving, and on the other hand, he refuses to eat anything that I offer.”

The reality star has worked tirelessly to understand her son’s unique perspective. “Smells are extremely overwhelming for him. Color is overwhelming for him. Textures of food are overwhelming and make him gag,” she explained. “I have to constantly remind myself that he doesn’t operate neurologically like we do.” This empathy has guided Simpson through the daily challenges of supporting Luke, whose sensory sensitivities make even simple meals a battle.

Despite the difficulties, there’s hope on the horizon. Luke is working with a therapist and a nutritionist, and he uses nose inserts with essential oils to mask the smells of foods that overwhelm him. These efforts have led to small but significant victories: Luke can now eat white rice, french fries, sliced bananas, potato chips, ice cream, and plain turkey—provided it’s free of any “lines or blemishes.” Each step forward is a testament to his resilience and his mother’s unwavering support.

The Cleveland Clinic notes that ARFID treatment often involves cognitive behavioral therapy and, in some cases, medications like antipsychotics, antidepressants, or appetite stimulants. For Simpson and her family, this journey is about patience, understanding, and incremental progress.

Filming RHOC Season 19 while navigating Luke’s health challenges brought Simpson to a crossroads. She questioned whether continuing on the show was the right choice, as parts of her son’s story will be featured. “Am I doing the right thing by being so honest about what we’re going through?” she reflected. Ultimately, Simpson chose to share their story, hoping it would resonate with other parents facing similar struggles. “All I can hope at the end is that it helps other parents,” she said.

The response from fans has been overwhelming. After opening up about Luke’s diagnosis, Simpson took to Instagram to express gratitude for the outpouring of support. “This was by far my most difficult season filming RHOC I’ve ever had, and there were multiple times I felt that it was in Luke’s best interest for me to quit,” she wrote. “My reason for continuing on and navigating this truly challenging time (in real time and on camera) was because I knew I’d get more answers, support, and feedback than any therapist or doctor could provide. The Bravo fans are incredible and caring people, and I wasn’t wrong!”

Simpson’s story is a powerful reminder of the unseen struggles that often lie beneath the surface of reality TV’s polished veneer. Her courage in sharing Luke’s journey with ARFID sheds light on a lesser-known disorder and offers hope to families facing similar challenges. She concluded her Instagram post with a heartfelt plea: “Please talk to your children about being kind to the kids who might be a little different ❤️.”

As Simpson continues to navigate this challenging chapter, her vulnerability and strength serve as an inspiration, proving that even in the world of Real Housewives, the most compelling stories are those of love, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child.
