On a recent episode of The Dave Carmichael Show on Sactown 1140am, hosts Dave Carmichael and Jason Ross dropped a bombshell, suggesting that any deal for Westbrook would likely require Kuminga as part of the package. “We do know this: for the Westbrook thing to happen, the Kuminga thing would almost definitely have to happen,” Carmichael stated, hinting at the Kings’ bold strategy to overhaul their roster. Ross echoed the sentiment, noting the team’s crowded backcourt would make Westbrook’s addition tricky without moving a guard, further tying the two players’ fates together.

The Kings have reportedly viewed landing both Westbrook and Kuminga as their “dream offseason” haul. Westbrook, a former MVP known for his explosive athleticism and relentless drive, could bring veteran leadership and star power to Sacramento’s backcourt. Meanwhile, Kuminga, a 22-year-old forward with sky-high potential, is seen as a cornerstone piece for the Kings’ future. ESPN’s Marc Stein added fuel to the fire, revealing that Kuminga is eager to join the Kings, who have promised him a starting role at power forward alongside Murray and Sabonis. “He wants to go,” Stein reported, citing a Zoom call between Kuminga, Kings GM Scott Perry, assistant GM BJ Armstrong, and head coach Mike Brown. The promise of a starting spot is particularly appealing for Kuminga, who saw his role diminish late last season under Warriors coach Steve Kerr due to a well-documented mismatch in playing style.

Despite Kuminga’s enthusiasm, the Warriors are reportedly unimpressed with the trade offers on the table. Stein noted that Golden State has been underwhelmed by proposals from both Sacramento and the Phoenix Suns, another team in the Kuminga sweepstakes. For instance, Phoenix’s rumored offer of Royce O’Neale, Nick Richards, and four second-round picks didn’t meet Golden State’s expectations, and Sacramento’s proposed first-round pick also fell short of the mark.
