BLOCKBUSTER ALERT: The Chicago Bulls Are Reportedly Eyeing a $22 Million Deal – Sending Shockwaves Through the Eastern Conference.

The NBA trade rumor mill is heating up, and the Chicago Bulls are right in the thick of it. With the 2025-26 season not unfolding as hoped, the Bulls are reportedly considering a bold move to acquire Dallas Mavericks center Dereck Lively II, who is currently in the third year of his four-year, $22.5 million rookie contract. This potential blockbuster could reshape the Eastern Conference landscape, injecting youth and defensive prowess into a Chicago roster desperate for a turnaround.

Entering the season with renewed optimism after key offseason moves, including re-signing point guard Josh Giddey to a lucrative long-term extension, the Bulls have stumbled out of the gate. At just 9-12 through the early portion of the schedule, the team finds itself hovering around the play-in tournament territory rather than contending for a top spot in the East. Injuries, inconsistent play, and defensive lapses have plagued the squad, leaving fans and analysts questioning if changes are imminent.

One undeniable highlight amid the struggles has been Giddey’s breakout performance. The 23-year-old Australian, acquired by Chicago in a 2024 trade and locked in long-term this past summer, has elevated his game to near All-Star levels. In 19 appearances, he’s posting impressive averages that have kept the Bulls competitive in many games.

Giddey’s triple-double threat has been a lifeline for Chicago’s offense, with his vision and rebounding helping to mask some of the team’s deficiencies. Shooting 48.6% from the field and a career-best 39.1% from beyond the arc, he’s proven worthy of the big contract extension he inked during the offseason.

However, individual brilliance hasn’t translated to team success, prompting speculation about Chicago’s activity on the trade market. Names like Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis have surfaced in rumors, with the Bulls potentially leveraging their assets for a proven veteran. But a more intriguing—and perhaps more attainable—target has emerged: Dereck Lively II from the Dallas Mavericks.

In a recent column for Bleacher Report, NBA insider Dan Favale highlighted Lively as one of Chicago’s top three trade targets, noting his potential fit as a long-term center solution. “Injuries and all, Dereck Lively II may prove too ambitious,” Favale wrote. “Yet, with absences piling up and his extension-eligibility on the horizon, he could be more gettable than at any point over the past three trade deadlines.”

Lively, the 12th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, signed his rookie-scale deal worth approximately $22.5 million over four years, making him an attractive option for salary-matching purposes in trades. While his role in Dallas has been inconsistent due to competition in the frontcourt and recurring injuries, he’s shown flashes of elite potential as a rim protector and lob threat.

This season, limited by health issues, Lively has appeared in just seven games, starting four.

Last season, however, offered a glimpse of his capabilities, where he suited up for 36 games (29 starts), averaging 8.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.6 blocks per game. His athleticism and defensive instincts could pair perfectly with Giddey’s playmaking, providing Chicago with a dynamic pick-and-roll duo for years to come.

The Mavericks, dealing with their own roster challenges and Lively’s injury history—including a recent foot fracture that sidelined him for 2-3 months—might be open to discussions, especially as they prioritize other pieces around stars like Luka Dončić. For the Bulls, acquiring Lively would represent a high-upside gamble. His injury concerns are valid, but if he stays healthy and develops further, he could become a cornerstone big man, sending shockwaves through the Eastern Conference by bolstering Chicago’s frontcourt and signaling a commitment to building around young talent.

Of course, pulling off such a deal wouldn’t be straightforward. The Bulls would likely need to part with assets like draft picks or young players to entice Dallas, and salary matching around Lively’s modest $5.25 million cap hit for 2025-26 could involve additional pieces. Still, in a conference dominated by teams like the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks, a move like this could be the catalyst Chicago needs to climb back into contention.

As the December 15 trade eligibility date passes and the February deadline approaches, all eyes will be on the Windy City. Will the Bulls pull the trigger on this $22 million deal and ignite their season? Only time will tell, but the rumors alone are enough to excite fans dreaming of a postseason push.
