CELTICS DROP A BOMBSHELL! Brad Stevens Identifies The $97M Defensive Anchor To Upgrade From Neemias Queta

The Boston Celtics have stunned the NBA by thriving without Jayson Tatum (Achilles tear in 2025 playoffs), thanks to Jaylen Brown’s MVP-level play. They’re 28-16 and 2nd in the East after a thrilling double-OT win over the Nets. With Tatum’s return looming, the front office is targeting a center upgrade to elevate the frontcourt.

Fansided’s Eamon Cassels proposed this trade:

  • Celtics receive: C Nic Claxton
  • Nets receive: G Anfernee Simons + 2026 first-round pick + two future second-rounders

Cassels wrote: “Boston has been one of the league’s best stories… Claxton’s interior defense, playmaking, and rim-running abilities make him a perfect fit in Boston. The price would be worth it to significantly increase title chances.”

Claxton’s Fit & Production Through 41 games, Claxton averages 12.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.4 blocks in 29.8 minutes, shooting 58.4% FG. He’s a strong rim protector, switchable defender, and efficient finisher – aligning perfectly with Joe Mazzulla’s switch-heavy, spacing-driven system. His contract ($25.3M this year, declining to $20.9M in the final year) is contender-friendly.

The Queta Factor – He’s Playing Well & Cheap Current starter Neemias Queta averages 10.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game – exceeding expectations. He’s $90 million cheaper than Claxton over the contract term. While Claxton offers better playmaking and switchability, the gap isn’t massive enough to justify losing Simons + picks unless the upgrade is clearly elite.

Anfernee Simons: Bench Sparkplug Not Easily Replaced Simons ($27.6M expiring) has become a key bench energizer – scoring explosively, spacing the floor, and fitting Mazzulla’s system. Trading him would cost Boston bench depth and scoring punch. Only a true star-level return would justify moving him.

Overall Trade Evaluation

  • Pros: Claxton raises the defensive and offensive ceiling, especially with Tatum returning. Solid contract, perfect system fit.
  • Cons: Queta is performing well and far cheaper. Simons is a valuable bench spark. Nets may demand more (picks or additional assets) as they rebuild.

Boston has also been linked to other centers (Ivica Zubac from Clippers as a prior target). The Claxton idea is worth keeping “in the back pocket” – especially if Queta falters or Tatum needs more rim protection/spacing upon return.

Deadline 5/2 Looms As true contenders, Brad Stevens can make a calculated move to push for Banner 19. Claxton is a top candidate – but the Celtics should only pull the trigger if he clearly elevates the team beyond Queta + Simons.
