LONDON DROPS A BOMBSHELL: Chelsea’s four potential Champions League opponents have just become painfully obvious

Chelsea secured direct passage to the Champions League round of 16 with a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Napoli in Naples on Wednesday, finishing sixth in the league phase and landing comfortably inside the top eight.

By avoiding the play-off round, the Blues join seven other clubs in automatic qualification for the last 16, sparing themselves an extra two-legged tie in an already packed February schedule.

The path to the round of 16 for the teams placed ninth to 24th is far less straightforward. Among them are four clubs that now stand out as Chelsea’s potential opponents: Paris Saint-Germain, Newcastle United, AS Monaco, and Qarabag.

The play-off draw, set for Friday 30 January at 12:00 CET (11:00 UK time), will pair the seeded teams — PSG and Newcastle — against Monaco and Qarabag. The two winners of those ties will then be drawn against either Chelsea or Barcelona in the round of 16.

The play-off first legs are scheduled for 17-18 February, with the return legs on 24-25 February. The round of 16 draw follows on Friday 27 February.

Speaking after the Napoli win, Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior underlined the significance of skipping the play-offs.

“Yeah, firstly, I think to get through in this competition is the most important thing, so I’m delighted to do it,” Rosenior said.

“In this way, in terms of our season, in terms of my time on the pitch with the players, that’s going to help us so much.”

With limited time to implement his ideas since taking charge, Rosenior sees the clearer February calendar as vital for tactical development.

“I’m so proud of them — even in the first half, I’m asking them to press in a completely different way that they’ve never done before and hardly had any practice at,” he explained.

“So that time over the next few weeks will help us get better and improve, but we still need to win games in this moment.”

For Chelsea, the opponents may not be confirmed until after the play-offs, but the shortlist of four is now crystal clear — and the stakes could hardly be higher.
