The Boston Celtics have been mentioned in rumors involving virtually every available big man this season, fueled by their clear need for frontcourt size and their abundance of trade assets. However, despite the heavy speculation, a major move at the deadline is looking increasingly unlikely.

According to multiple reports, the Celtics have run into significant roadblocks in their pursuit of impactful frontcourt help. Their recent offer for Ivica Zubac — which was headlined by Anfernee Simons, a first-round pick, and a first-round pick swap — was rejected by the Clippers. With Los Angeles currently on a strong run and climbing back into playoff position, that door appears to have closed.
Now, new information from ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps suggests the Celtics may be forced to temper their expectations. Sources indicate that Brad Stevens is expected to remain active at the deadline, but likely in a more limited capacity — making smaller, marginal improvements rather than swinging for a star.
Anfernee Simons is viewed as the most likely salary-matching piece to be moved if Boston wants to acquire a bigger contract. However, blockbuster pursuits for players like Giannis Antetokounmpo or Jaren Jackson Jr. are considered highly unrealistic at this stage.
Instead, the Celtics are more likely to target younger or more realistic options such as New Orleans’ Yves Missi or Dallas’ Daniel Gafford. While Gafford would bring rim protection and physicality, he does not solve Boston’s need for spacing or a true stretch big.
The broader market is also playing a major role. Much of the league appears to be in a holding pattern, waiting to see how the Milwaukee Bucks situation with Giannis Antetokounmpo develops. This uncertainty has created a “traffic jam” effect, making big trades harder to execute right now.
