In a stunning development ahead of the NBA trade deadline, multiple insiders reported on Thursday that the Golden State Warriors have tabled a massive offer to the Milwaukee Bucks for two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. The proposed package would include every available future draft pick the Warriors possess, signaling an all-in push to pair the Greek Freak with Stephen Curry before the February 5 deadline.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who just weeks ago cautioned his front office against depleting the team’s asset chest, addressed the swirling reports during an appearance on “Willard & Dibs.”
“The beauty of being a coach is you don’t have to worry about any of that stuff,” Kerr said with a measured tone. “My job is to coach the team, and I’m focused on that. It’s Mike [Dunleavy], Joe [Lacob], and the whole group’s job to make those decisions.”
Kerr expressed full confidence in the organization’s leadership: “I have great faith in what they do and their decision-making. Whatever it is, I know they’re not going to jeopardize the franchise’s long-term future unless something really makes sense to them. That’s what they have to assess and decide.”
A Shift in Philosophy?
The reported offer marks a notable departure from Kerr’s earlier stance. Just weeks ago, the longtime coach openly warned against trading away the Warriors’ future draft capital, pointing to the Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns, and LA Clippers as cautionary tales of teams that mortgaged their assets with mixed results.
“You can really paint yourself into a corner if you’re risky and irresponsible,” Kerr said at the time, emphasizing the danger of leaving the franchise without flexibility.
The apparent change in tone comes in the wake of a devastating blow: the season-ending ACL tear suffered by Jimmy Butler III. The injury has intensified Golden State’s urgency to upgrade the roster around Curry, and sources indicate the Warriors are now prepared to empty the vault for Antetokounmpo.
According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, Golden State has put everything on the table. NBC Sports’ Kurt Helin reports the Warriors have emerged as the clear frontrunners among aggressive suitors, thanks to their ability to offer the most attractive collection of future picks.
Questions About Fit
While the prospect of Curry and Antetokounmpo sharing the floor is tantalizing, not everyone is convinced it would be seamless. Former Warrior DeMarcus Cousins, who played under Kerr during the 2018-19 season, raised concerns about how Giannis would adapt to Golden State’s motion-heavy system.
“You think about the fit next to Draymond [Green] and how that works. You have to figure out that dynamic,” Cousins said on FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back.”
“And then you also have to consider Steve Kerr—is he even the right guy to coach a talent like Giannis? This isn’t a guy who has shown, throughout his history, to really tweak his system. You have to come in and fit the system.”
“I don’t necessarily know if Giannis is the perfect fit for that system,” Cousins concluded.
The New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Miami Heat are reportedly the other primary contenders pushing hard for Antetokounmpo.
With the deadline looming, the basketball world is watching to see if the Warriors’ bombshell offer will be enough to bring one of the league’s most dominant forces to the Bay Area—and whether Kerr’s trust in the front office will be rewarded with a franchise-altering move.
