BLOW IT UP! With Warriors cooked, a Stephen Curry-Hornets trade could be good for everyone

The Golden State Warriors’ dynasty is officially over. They’re too old, too predictable, and plagued by locker room drama to compete in the stacked Western Conference. Their dismal record says it all—it’s time to tear it down and start fresh. It’s been an incredible era, but clinging to the past won’t change the inevitable.

Stephen Curry.
Stephen Curry.

If there’s one player who can’t be held responsible for the slide, it’s Stephen Curry. At 37, he’s still delivering All-Star performances, and his unique style suggests he could keep this up for a couple more seasons. Curry remains a game-changer, but the Warriors’ current setup is holding him back. Watching him fade away on a sinking ship would be heartbreaking—for him and for fans everywhere. He deserves a shot at something better.

Now, picture the flip side: Curry joining a fresh, ascending team full of young talent. Maybe in the Eastern Conference, where the path to contention isn’t as brutal. It doesn’t take long to land on the Charlotte Hornets as the perfect fit for this dream scenario.

This idea isn’t just fan fiction—Bill Simmons brought it up on his podcast Tuesday, half-seriously pitching it to NBA analyst Tim Legler. “Are we at the point where Curry to Charlotte, we should just do it?” Simmons asked. He highlighted Curry’s roots in the city, his dad’s presence there, and even Curry’s past jokes about finishing his career in Charlotte.

Simmons didn’t stop at sentiment: “I don’t think this Warriors team has any chance,” he added, referencing Draymond Green’s recent meltdown. “Can we just do the LaMelo and a bunch of picks (trade) and send Curry back to Charlotte and let’s just go?”

Legler’s take added some real intrigue, especially his idea of Curry pairing with Duke standout Kon Knueppel to form a new Splash Brothers tandem. Knueppel enters the league as one of the purest shooters since the Curry-Klay Thompson era, and with Curry still elite, that duo could terrorize defenses right away.

For the Hornets, acquiring Curry would be a no-brainer blockbuster. They’d jump at the chance to ship out LaMelo Ball in a deal like this. Ball’s talent and star power are undeniable, but his fit alongside the emerging Knueppel-Brandon Miller core is shaky at best. Ditching his $168 million contract—along with his nagging injury history—would be a relief, and Curry’s arrival would more than make up for any lost buzz.

Slot Curry into Charlotte’s young lineup, and suddenly you’ve got a team eyeing a Play-In spot this year and a genuine playoff push in the softer East next season. It’s a win-win: excitement, relevance, and a path forward.

Of course, there’s one massive roadblock—Curry’s unwavering loyalty to Golden State. No matter how rough things get, he seems committed to retiring as a Warrior. That legacy matters more to him than chasing rings elsewhere. Still, in a league full of surprises, maybe it’s time to blow it up and give everyone a fresh start.
