BOMBSHELL UPDATE: Fabrizio Romano provides important Xabi Alonso to Chelsea update

Chelsea’s managerial search has entered a critical phase following the abrupt end to Liam Rosenior’s brief tenure, which lasted just 104 days. As the club hunts for a successor capable of stabilising a turbulent period at Stamford Bridge, one name continues to generate significant speculation: Xabi Alonso.

The 44-year-old Spaniard, who has been out of work since departing Real Madrid earlier this year, is widely regarded as one of the most attractive managerial targets in European football. With a reputation for tactical sophistication and a successful playing career that included five years at Liverpool, Alonso is seen as a Premier League-ready coach who could command attention from several top clubs.

However, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the reality behind the links to Chelsea remains far more measured than the rumours suggest.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano delivered a clear update that dampens immediate expectations. “I can guarantee that Liverpool this year [2026] never made any direct approach with Xabi Alonso or his agents,” he stated. “I can guarantee nothing is advanced or concrete on Xabi Alonso to Chelsea.”

Romano added that Alonso is “ready to restart” and remains “very open to opportunities around Europe if he can find the right project.” While the former midfielder is expected to return to the dugout sooner rather than later, and is tipped to test himself in the Premier League, no concrete negotiations appear to have materialised with the Blues.

Liverpool factor and Slot’s uncertain future

Alonso’s deep connection to Liverpool — where he enjoyed a highly successful playing spell — has long positioned the Anfield club as his dream destination. Yet, even there, contact has been minimal. With Arne Slot enduring a disappointing second season that has delivered no silverware and left the Reds fighting to secure European qualification, an end-of-season review is expected at Anfield.

This internal assessment at Liverpool could eventually open the door for a managerial change, but as things stand, Alonso does not appear to be the subject of any advanced talks from either Merseyside or West London.

Other candidates and Chelsea’s timeline

Chelsea are also linked with AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, who has already confirmed he will leave the south coast club at the end of the current campaign. While multiple high-profile names remain under consideration, the clock is ticking for the Blues.

Pre-season is rapidly approaching, and the new head coach will require sufficient time to implement their philosophy, shape the squad, and prepare for the 2026-27 Premier League season, which kicks off in August. The situation is further complicated by the upcoming 2026 World Cup in North America, where player availability and potential injuries will need careful management.

For now, all focus at Stamford Bridge remains on next weekend’s FA Cup final against Manchester City. Whether Chelsea lift the trophy or not, club owners BlueCo are expected to shift their full attention immediately afterwards to finalising the managerial appointment.

While the Alonso rumour mill will likely continue, Romano’s latest update provides a dose of realism: at present, there is no concrete momentum linking the highly-rated Spaniard with the Chelsea job. The coming weeks, however, could prove decisive in determining the next chapter for both the club and one of football’s most promising young coaches.
