BOMBSHELL UPDATE : Los Angeles Lakers Player Ejected From Game 4 Against Rockets

HOUSTON — The Los Angeles Lakers’ bid for a first-round playoff sweep took a dramatic and violent turn Sunday night, as starting center Deandre Ayton was ejected midway through the third quarter of Game 4 against the Houston Rockets after being assessed a Flagrant 2 foul.

The incident occurred at Toyota Center with the Lakers already trailing 76-57. Ayton, who had been Los Angeles’ most effective player through the first 25 minutes of action, delivered a forearm shot to the side of Rockets center Alperen Sengun’s head. The officials reviewed the play and swiftly upgraded the call to a Flagrant 2, resulting in an automatic ejection.

ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported from courtside: “Deandre Ayton is called for a Flagrant 2 foul for a forearm shot to the side of Alperen Sengun’s head and he is ejected. The Lakers, already down 76-57 midway through the 3rd Q, lose what had been their most effective player thus far.”

Prior to his departure, Ayton had posted 19 points and 10 rebounds on an efficient 9-of-12 shooting from the field in just 25 minutes. The former No. 1 overall pick and Arizona standout was in his first season with the Lakers after signing as a free agent, having averaged 12.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game during the regular season while shooting a remarkable 67.1% from the floor across 72 games.

Short-Handed Lakers Face Uphill Climb

The ejection could not have come at a worse time for Los Angeles. Already playing without injured stars Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic, the Lakers now find themselves shorthanded in a game that would have secured a series sweep. With Ayton sidelined, the team’s frontcourt rotation shrinks considerably, putting additional pressure on LeBron James and the remaining starters to mount a comeback.

If the deficit continues to grow into a blowout, Lakers head coach JJ Redick may opt to rest his starters and turn attention to Game 5. That contest would be played Wednesday night at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, where the Lakers would have a second chance to close out the Rockets on their home floor.

NBA Social Media Reacts to Ayton News

The flagrant foul and ejection quickly became a lightning rod on social media. Fans and analysts alike weighed in on the play, with many debating whether the forearm to Sengun’s head warranted a Flagrant 2 or could have been downgraded to a common foul. Others noted Ayton’s frustration as the Lakers struggled to find offensive rhythm without their two primary ball-handlers.

McMenamin’s tweet alone drew hundreds of replies within minutes, with reactions ranging from criticism of Ayton’s discipline to concern over the Lakers’ chances of closing out the series. Houston supporters, meanwhile, saw the ejection as a turning point that could force a Game 5 and extend the Rockets’ season.

As the fourth quarter loomed, Los Angeles faced a steep deficit and a suddenly uncertain path to the second round. The Lakers had entered Sunday night with a chance to sweep. Now, they will likely need to regroup, rally, and finish the job at home — with or without their starting center.
