BOMBSHELL UPDATE: Next Chelsea manager has nine non-negotiables as BlueCo face difficult Cole Palmer decision

Chelsea are hunting for their next permanent head coach after parting ways with Liam Rosenior following a brief 104-day spell in charge. The 41-year-old becomes the fifth manager to exit Stamford Bridge since Clearlake Capital, led by Behdad Eghbali and Todd Boehly, completed their takeover in May 2022.

Senior figures at the club are understood to be reflecting on past mistakes and are prepared to take their time to appoint the right candidate. BlueCo are prioritising a head coach who can nurture and develop Chelsea’s talented young squad.

Names such as Andoni Iraola, Marco Silva, and Xabi Alonso have been linked with the vacancy, though no decision has been made yet. Whoever takes the job will inherit the major task of rebuilding a squad in need of a major overhaul.

According to football.london, the next Chelsea manager should build his team around just nine non-negotiable players.

Four defenders survive the expected mass exodus

In a long-overdue defensive rebuild, only four defenders are seen as guaranteed to remain central to Chelsea’s plans next season: Levi Colwill, Reece James, Jorrel Hato, and Josh Acheampong.

Last summer, following Enzo Maresca’s Club World Cup triumph over Paris Saint-Germain, the Blues looked to be turning a corner. A couple of key additions appeared enough to create a competitive backline. However, Colwill’s anterior cruciate ligament injury in pre-season forced a change in strategy, with the club needing to strengthen both centre-back positions.

Despite heavy investment, the only dedicated centre-back signed was Mamadou Sarr, who was quickly loaned out to Strasbourg and has made limited impact since his recall. Through a combination of injuries, form, and managerial choices, several defenders have struggled — but James and Hato have stood out positively, while Colwill and Acheampong have shown clear quality when available.

Chelsea face fight to retain midfield stars

The club will need to work hard to keep Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo at Stamford Bridge. Losing either — or both — would force a complete midfield rebuild, something the new manager will want to avoid.

Andrey Santos showed promising flashes under Rosenior, while Romeo Lavia has yet to consistently hit the heights expected of him after returning from injury.

Cole Palmer faces harsh reality check

One of the biggest storylines surrounds Cole Palmer. The 23-year-old will reportedly need to impress heavily in pre-season to secure his status as a key player under the new regime. While Joao Pedro has shouldered much of the creative and goalscoring burden in the final third, Palmer’s form has dipped, partly due to fitness issues.

The England international now faces a critical period to prove his worth and reclaim his place among Chelsea’s elite.

The nine non-negotiables for the next Chelsea manager

The next head coach should focus on building the squad around these nine players:

  • Levi Colwill
  • Reece James
  • Jorrel Hato
  • Josh Acheampong
  • Enzo Fernandez
  • Moises Caicedo
  • Joao Pedro
  • Estevao Willian
  • Cole Palmer

Apart from goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and defender Trevoh Chalobah — who may earn reprieves based on strong showings under Maresca — the vast majority of the current senior squad should not be considered safe.

This summer represents a pivotal moment for BlueCo and the new manager as they attempt to reshape Chelsea into genuine title contenders once again. The decisions made on these nine players, particularly regarding Cole Palmer’s future, could define the next era at Stamford Bridge.
