After weeks of speculation and negotiations, the Golden State Warriors and head coach Steve Kerr have reached a resolution: Kerr is staying in Oakland.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Kerr and the Warriors have agreed to a new two-year contract extension. The deal not only ensures Kerr will remain on the sideline but also keeps him as the NBA’s highest-paid coach.
Kerr has been the face of the Warriors’ bench since the start of the 2014-15 season. In that time, he has transformed the franchise into one of the most successful and influential organizations in modern NBA history. Under his leadership, the Warriors have reached six NBA Finals, capturing four championships — most recently in the 2021-22 season.
Yet the landscape has shifted. As the team’s veteran core has aged and key pieces like Klay Thompson have moved on, consistent deep playoff runs have become harder to achieve. The Warriors have not returned to the Western Conference Finals since their last title in 2022 and have missed the playoffs entirely in four of the past seven seasons.

This recent stretch of relative struggle has fueled conversations about the team’s direction, highlighted this week by Draymond Green’s appearance on Inside the NBA and the ensuing exchange with Charles Barkley. Still, the franchise’s postseason challenges appear to reflect the natural cycle of contention in professional sports more than any shortcomings on Kerr’s part.
No team remains atop the mountain indefinitely. The Warriors have taken a step back from the league’s current elite, but the organization is betting that Kerr — with his proven track record, player relationships, and championship pedigree — is the right leader to guide them back to contention.
