BREAKING AT CAMP MIAMI: Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami receive interesting update on one of their potential striker signings

Inter Miami’s preseason got off to a rough start with a 3-0 defeat to Alianza Lima, but the club’s front office is wasting no time addressing the squad’s needs. As the Herons look to bolster Lionel Messi’s supporting cast ahead of the new MLS season, a significant update has emerged regarding one of their top striker targets: Monterrey’s Germán Berterame.

The Argentine-born forward, fresh off international duty with Mexico, spoke to reporters after El Tri’s victory over Bolivia. While the initial questions centered on his goal in the match, the conversation quickly turned to the transfer speculation that has dominated headlines in recent weeks—his potential move to South Florida.

When asked directly about joining Messi’s Inter Miami, Berterame kept his cards close but left the door firmly ajar. “I’m doing well. Right now, I was very focused on the national team—I just arrived today. So now it’s time to enjoy my family, and we’ll analyze everything this week,” he said. Pressed on whether a decision had already been made about leaving Monterrey, he remained measured: “Like I said, I’ve just arrived, and I’ll look at it during the week.”

The timing couldn’t be more intriguing. With the 2026 World Cup less than six months away, Berterame has been making his case for a regular spot in Javier Aguirre’s Mexico squad. Called up to represent domestic-based talent from Liga MX and MLS, he logged 68 minutes against Panama and 33 minutes against Bolivia—capping the latter with a clinical goal. Speaking to Claro Sports at the airport, he shared his ambition: “I always try to give my best with the national team. It’s a dream for me and for everyone who gets called up. We have to stay focused on that.”

Behind the scenes, the transfer appears closer than ever. According to The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, Inter Miami and Monterrey have already reached an agreement on a $15 million fee. Berterame is expected to occupy the club’s final Designated Player slot alongside Messi, Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets—a move that would instantly upgrade Miami’s attacking depth.

Monterrey, meanwhile, are moving quickly to find a replacement. Reports indicate the Rayados are intensifying their pursuit of Atlas forward Uros Djurdjevic, Colombian international Rafael Santos Borré, and Brazilian striker Rafael Navarro as they prepare for life without their prolific marksman.

All eyes now turn to this week. Will Berterame give Inter Miami the green light and become the latest high-profile addition to Messi’s project? The Herons—and their fans—are waiting anxiously for the answer.
