O’Keefe argues that the Warriors should offer Payton a one-year, veteran minimum contract, reflecting his current value to the team. “That’s not to say that Golden State should just discard Payton and not look to re-sign him, but they need to make the call that a one-year, veteran minimum contract is all that he’s worth on this iteration of the roster,” O’Keefe noted. If Payton feels slighted by this offer and seeks a bigger deal elsewhere, O’Keefe suggests the Warriors should let him walk, allowing another team to take the risk on a player whose impact may be tied to Kerr’s system.
