Bulls injury report: Starter upgraded to questionable for Celtics game

The Chicago Bulls could receive a significant boost in their lineup as starting guard Coby White has been upgraded to questionable for Monday’s matchup against the Boston Celtics. White, who has missed the past three games due to right calf injury management, sustained the injury during a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on December 29. The Bulls are set to tip off at 7:30 p.m. ET at TD Garden in Boston.

White’s potential return comes at a critical time for the Bulls, who have been dealing with a mounting injury list. The team has listed several other players as out for the contest: Zach Collins (toe), Noa Essengue (shoulder), Trentyn Flowers (knee), and Josh Giddey (hamstring). Giddey, acquired in a blockbuster trade last offseason, also injured his hamstring in the same December 29 game against the Timberwolves and has been sidelined since. His absence has been particularly felt, as the Australian point guard has been enjoying a breakout season, averaging 19.2 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 9.0 assists over 30 games.

On the Celtics’ side, the injury report is relatively light, with only star forward Jayson Tatum ruled out as he continues rehabilitation for an Achilles injury. Boston has managed well without him recently, coming off a strong 4-1 road trip that has solidified their position in the Eastern Conference standings.

White, a key contributor for Chicago, has been a reliable scoring option this season. Through 16 games (14 starts), he’s averaging 19.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 4.7 assists. His consistency over the past three seasons has made him a cornerstone of the Bulls’ offense, providing perimeter shooting and playmaking that the team has sorely missed during his recent absence.

The Bulls enter the game with a 17-18 record, a far cry from their hot 6-1 start to the season. Injuries and inconsistent play have plagued the team, positioning them as likely candidates for the play-in tournament once again. In contrast, the Celtics have been one of the NBA’s hottest teams, boasting a 22-12 record that places them third in the East. Boston’s depth and defensive prowess have kept them competitive, even with Tatum on the mend.

If White suits up, it could provide a spark for Chicago against a formidable Celtics squad. Bulls head coach Billy Donovan has emphasized the importance of health in turning the season around, and White’s return would be a step in the right direction. Fans will be watching the pre-game warmups closely for any updates on his status.
