With Jayson Tatum sidelined for most (if not all) of the 2025-26 season due to an Achilles injury, the Boston Celtics entered the year with massive questions. Could Jaylen Brown elevate his game to true superstar status as the undisputed No. 1 option?

Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown
Through 30 games, the answer is a resounding yes.
The 29-year-old Georgia native is having the best season of his 10-year career:
29.5 points6.3 rebounds5.0 assists1.2 stealsShooting 50.5% from the field and 37% from three
These numbers aren’t just impressive—they’re carrying a Celtics team sitting at 20-12 and holding the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, just 4.5 games behind the Detroit Pistons.
Brown’s impact goes beyond scoring. He’s embraced the role of defensive anchor, routinely tasked with guarding the opponent’s best player. His on-ball defense—using strength, quickness, and aggression—has been elite, even if off-ball lapses (ball-watching) remain an occasional flaw.
After Boston’s latest win over the Utah Jazz on Tuesday, Brown took to social media with a bold declaration, seemingly crowning himself the “Best 2-way player in the game.”
Is Brown the NBA’s Top Two-Way Wing?
Calling himself the absolute best might be a stretch—players like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Victor Wembanyama, and a healthy Tatum provide more overall impact. But Brown absolutely belongs in the conversation.
Head coach Joe Mazzulla praised Brown’s defensive pride back in March 2024 (via NBC Sports Boston): “I think the difference this year is the pride that he takes in guarding whoever he needs to guard… He’s understanding that he can have a crazy impact on the game in many ways without scoring.”
That mindset has carried over. Brown’s versatility (guarding 1-5 when needed) and willingness to take tough assignments have been crucial for a Celtics team exceeding expectations.
The Bigger Picture
Boston was predicted by many to take a step back without Tatum. Instead, Brown’s leadership—on both ends—has kept them firmly in the East’s top tier. His play has silenced doubters and proven he’s more than a “Robin”—he’s a legitimate Batman when called upon.
Whether he’s the undisputed best two-way player or not, one thing is clear: Jaylen Brown is playing at an All-NBA level, and the Celtics are thriving because of it.
Celtics Nation: JB is delivering. This season is his statement.
